  2. Directions • Listen to the following sentence, and write it with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. • ALL of these sentences will be part of your binder check. • Number and date them as we go (you can keep them on the same page)

  3. 1. Wednesday, November 7, 2012 • To avoid horrendousgrammar and spelling mistakes and to get immediate feedback, sentence dictations will be given daily. • Infinitive phrase = to plus verb • If you start a sentence with one, place a comma after the phrase • Parallelism – phrases “match” (to avoid & to get) • Spelling words!

  4. Please Do Now Underneath your sentence dictation from yesterday DRAW A LINE & PUT THE DATE (11/8). (*if you were not here yesterday, start a new sheet of paper with the date) Then: • List at least 3 symbols in everyday life that are used to represent something else. • For example, • <3 symbolizes love

  5. Please Do Now • A “Please Do Now” is a short task that you begin as soon as you walk in the door. • It will go in your binder AFTER yesterday’s “sentence dictation” and BEFORE today’s sentence dictation. • Separate them by them dates. Draw a line to show the separation.

  6. Binders • Do not clean them out yet—we need to finish the short story unit Grading System for Binders: • Spelling Worksheets & Quizzes = 25% • Sentence Dictations = 25% • “Please Do Now's” = 25% • Notes & Worksheets = 25%

  7. Sentence Dictation #2 • 2. Symbolism is indispensableto writers and advertisers because it allows them to associatetheir desires with oursubconscious. • To = preposition (shows relationship) • To writers and advertisers = Prepositional phrase • Because = subordinate conjunction

Please Do Now • YOU HAVE 2 MINUTES AFTER THE BELL RINGS TO: • Get out your Please Do Now’s and Sentence Dictations • Draw a line • Skip a Space • Put today’s date, Friday 11/9 • Write: • harass, height, hierarchy, horrendous, humorous, ignorance, immediate, incredible, independent, indispensable

Sentence Dictation #3 • To grasp the concept of symbolism even more, you will be discovering some popular allusions to the number seven. • To grasp = infinitive phrase (comma rule) • Allusions – references to well-known people, places, things, or ideas. • Spell out all numbers that can be written with two or less words. (1-100, 200…)

  10. Please Do Now • Underneath your last Sentence Dictation: • Draw a line • Skip a space • Add the Date: 11/12 • THEN: • Create a paragraph using at least 5 of your vocabulary words. (vocab packet & posters) • Yes, you must use correct, grammar, spelling and punctuation. • You will be reading it out loud to a partner.

  11. Sentence Dictation #4 • It’s important that we take responsibility for our own actions andthat we do not easily pass judgment on others. • Its Vs. It’s = possessive pronoun vs. it is • No Comma before “and” because there are not TWO sentences on each side (compound sentence) • That…two parallel phrases combined by “and”

  12. Please Do Now • Finish Vocab Packet (visual poster descriptions on sideboard if needed) • Turn in vocab packet BEFORE timer goes off (7 minutes) • Work on Spelling List #7

  13. 11/13 Sentence Dictation #5 • My vocabulary packet worth fifty points was due today, and I have a quiz on my knowledge of “The Masque of the Red Death” on Thursday and a spelling quiz on Friday. • , and = compound sentence (2 sentences joined by a conjunction (and)) • And = joining two phrases (no comma) • “” – Short Stories go in quotations • Capitalize the days of the week (proper noun)

  14. 11/14 Please Do now • (skip space, draw a line, add the date) • Think of a popular “Brand” of Anything (clothing, shoes, sports teams, toothpaste, hair products, food…) • Draw OR Describe the “Logo” • Write down the colors associated with it

Sentence Dictation #6 • Because color offers an instantaneous method for conveying meaning and messages without words, brands and color are inextricably linked. • Because = subordinate conjunction • Start a sentence with subordinate clause = comma where the clause ends • Clause = subject + verb, but no complete thought • Inextricably = inseparable

  16. 11/15 Please Do Now • Complete Part I of the “Symbolism of Colors in Branding and Advertising Activity” • Read the article (on the cart) • As you read: • Underline the word “color” along with the rest of the sentence • Circle the name of every color, and underline the rest of the sentence.

  17. No sentence dictation today. • Good luck on your quiz. • The answers to #’s 3, 15, & 18 have been given to you—use them! • #’s 51-55 (on the back) • 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, 5=E • Tomorrow, you will find an advertisement and complete Part II of the symbolism activity

Sentence Dictation #7 • Using at least two specific references from the article “Color & Branding”, prove that the company purposefully chose at least two specific colors to convey a meaning or message. • Article in Quotation Marks • Place comma where gerund phrase ends • Gerund phrase = start a sentence with -ing • Comma outside of the quotes because it’s NOT dialogue
