  1. Animal Experimentation Tommie Clark

  2. introduction • There are extremely different perspectives when looking at animal testing • A proper compromise would involve a set of measures being put in place in order to secure the future use of animals in research

  3. Thesis • One perspective is that any type of experimentation performed on any type of animal is cruel and unethical while also being executed without proper constraints. With this being said, animal experimentation does aid the advancement in the world of science while allowing investigation into scientific questions. Therefore a proper compromise would involve a set of measures being put in place in order to secure the future use of animals in research.

  4. Against Animal Experimentation Cruel and unethical to animals Animals rarely serve as good models for the human body Condition of animals does not add up to real life scenarios Executed without proper restraints Test drugs on humans anyway Animal Welfare Act- allows animals to be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, and more

  5. Examples • Penicillin kills guinea pigs but is inactive in rabbits • Aspirin kills cats and causes birth defects in rats, mice, guinea pigs, dogs, and monkeys • Morphine, a depressant in humans, stimulates goats, cats, and horses • Most of the drugs used on animals have different responses from those on humans

  6. Pro animal experimentation • Advancement due to animal experimentation • We are affected every day by at least one thing that has been influenced by animal testing • Many of the things we take for granted would not exist • Allows investigation of scientific questions • Medical field impacted by use of animals- discoveries and treatments

  7. examples • Discovery of diabetes cure by dog experimentation with insulin • Treatment of rabies, arthritis, whooping cough, leprosy, diphtheria, rubella, measles, and anthrax due to animal experimentation

  8. There is a “brighter future” for all animals and animal activists due to the “cutting-edge” technology we have today. • This includes “human clinical and epidemiological studies, human tissue- and cell-based research methods, cadavers, and sophisticated high-fidelity human patient simulators,” (Animal). • These methods are “more reliable, more precise, less expensive, and more humane than animal experiments,” (Animal). mediation Improve conditions for lab animals Reduce the number of animals used in experiment Investigate alternative approach
