When? • Now!: Preschool years as foundational, fundamental, basic, crucial • Early development windows of opportunity (e.g., flexibility) • Beginning of enduring healthy or unhealthy habits • Moderate & vigorous activities throughout the day • Preschoolers should not sit for more than 1 hour and should spend less than 2 hours of screen time total daily

Walking • Easy and affordable way to get moving and get outside • From a walk around the block to walking a dog, to a mountain hike, opportunities to explore and learn • Walking and hiking improve cardiovascular health and build stronger bones
Biking • Fun, family-friendly activity, can help improve endurance and balance • Use bike as a means of "active transport" to get places faster while also getting healthier • Explore community by bike together
Swimming • When the weather is warm, there is no better way to cool off - or get fit • Burns more calories per hour than almost any other activity • Improves cardiovascular health and leads to greater strength and flexibility • It's low-impact, easier on joints
How? Moving by Example • Active adults tend to raise active children • Adults influence children’s attitudes, actions, habits • Moving as a family and as a class are fun, and have bonding power • Children who feel supported by adults to be active, or are surrounded by others who are, are more likely to be active • Move together, stressing cooperation, fun, and health, rather than competition, weight, and performance
How? Moving by Example • Take the stairs instead of the elevator • Walk around the block after meals • Make a house rule: no sitting still during TV ads • Find time to spend together doing a fun activity: family park day, swim day or bike day • Issue a challenge to achieve a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award by committing to physical activity 5 days a week, for 6 weeks

Tips by Age • Age 2: running, walking, galloping, jumping, swimming with adult help and supervision • Age 3: hopping, climbing, riding a tricycle or bicycle with training wheels and a helmet, catching, throwing, kicking a ball • Age 4: skipping, tag, swimming, obstacle course • Age 5: riding a bicycle ― wearing a helmet, somersaulting, rollerblading or ice skating, gymnastics, soccer, virtual fitness games
Tools • Make available toys and materials that encourage movement, like balls, beanbags, jump ropes, sports equipment, riding toys, climbers, balance beams, obstacle courses, and music!!!
