BACKGROUND • The belief in spirit spouse is widespread. • It is alleged that some humans have constant sexual relationship with spirit spouses. • It is considered a major socio-cultural, economic and religious problem. • The Christians see it as a form of sin and bondage • Thousands seed deliverance.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES • To study the belief in spirit spouses • To examine how widespread the belief is • To investigate the nature of relationship • To study the consequences of such relationship • To examine the methods of getting rid of spirit spouses • To open up academic research interest for this phenomenon

  4. METHODOLOGY • Unstructured random interview of Nigerians from different ethnic groups • Interview of deliverance ministers and traditional healers • Books and other written reports on this phenomenon - newspapers, magazines, church news

  5. SPIRIT SPOUSE: WHAT IS IT?Descriptions • Sexual partners seen only by the human spouse in dream state. • Could sometimes be seen and communicated with while awake. • Could sometimes be visible in physical form (as flesh and blood) • They live in the water and come out whenever they like.

  6. WHO IS AFFECTED? • It would seem thousands from different ethnic backgrounds • Females more than males especially the youths • Historical preference – fair complexioned women

HOW DOES ONE AQUIRE A SPIRIT SPOUSE? • Other world mate/ water spirits • Dedication • Free will • Unsolicited love from mami-water • Spiritual playmate from babyhood • Marriage in the dream • Sexual relationship with a spirit possessed person • Earthly marriage with a seemingly normal human being (even though a spirit) • Marriage to a ghost of a dead person

CONSEQUENCES • Devastations to the lives of the human partners • Jealoused disturb the marital ambitions of human partners • Unsolicited and undesired sexual activities • Barrenness • Ill health • General bad luck and misfortunes • Lack of success in business ventures and other endeavours • Nevertheless, some spirit spouses are said to bestow good luck if well treated by human partners

CURE • Erecting an alter in the honour of the spirit spouse • Prescribed sacrifice at designated shrines • Making wooden figurines of the spouses to give them care • Deliverance – powerful minister of God, “warfare prayers”, Bible, anointing oil, holy water, rosary • Deliverance through powerful Malams through rukiyyah

FINDINGS • The belief is pervasive • Expression of sexual fantasy • Outlet for suppressed sexual thoughts • Expression of sexual frustration • Supernatural explanation for sexual dysfunction and sexual fantasy • Ways of absolving the human partner from taking responsibility for his/her sexual activities or limitations.

  11. CONCLUSION • Though the belief in spirit spouses could be the expression of sexual fantasy, it should not be dismissed with a wave of the hand since those who experience these relationships could swear that they are real, active and powerful. • Most times, the human partners feel that their sexuality has been limited.
