  1. Global Learning Programme Charlotte Hunt

  2. What is the Global Learning Programme? The GLP is a ground-breaking new programme which will create a national network of like-minded schools, committed to equipping their students to succeed in a globalised world by helping them to deliver effective teaching and learning about international development and global issues at Key Stages 2 and 3

  3. GLP: Funding and duration • Funded by DFID • Five year programme (2013 – 2017) • Possible 2 year extension

  4. Who is delivering the GLP? Development Education Consortium - seven partners

  5. The GLP Team • Central team • Development Education Consortium of 7 partners • Field-based team • School Network Manager • 4 National Leaders • 17 Local Advisors

  6. Aims of the GLP Six aims: • To help young people to understand their role in a globally-interdependent world and to explore strategies by which they can make it more just and sustainable • To familiarise them with the concepts of interdependence, development, globalisation and sustainability

  7. Aims of the GLP • To move them from a charity mentality to a social justice mentality • To stimulate critical thinking about global issues both at whole school and at student level • To promote greater awareness of poverty and sustainability • To enable schools to explore alternative models of development and sustainability in the classroom.

  8. The GLP & development education Under the Global Learning Programme, the key themes of development education will be: • knowledge of developing countries, their economies, histories and human geography • knowledge of the basic elements of globalisation and • knowledge of different ways to achieve global poverty reduction and the arguments around the merits of these different approaches

  9. Focus of the GLP • Whole school ethos • The most effective way to carry out global learning is in a whole school way and doing so can help support school improvement

  10. Whole school improvement Teacher’s practice Global Learning Student Outcomes: Reflection Governors GLOBAL Pupil achievement Evaluating Planning Pupils Global skills Staff relationships Behaviour and Global values VISION Wider community Doing Global knowledge Leadership & the community Whole school improvement Whole-school focus A global learning school has a vision to develop global learning student outcomes across the school. This vision is embedded through a planned process, involving staff, pupils, governors and the wider community in global activities.

  11. Target curriculum areas • English, history, geography, maths and science • Also citizenship and RE • Working with subject associations to produce a knowledge framework for target areas • Knowledge framework will link to KS2 & KS3 statutory curriculum and beyond to help teachers embed GL in teaching and learning

  12. GLP Model: Expert Centres and Partner Schools

  13. Programme model • Primary, secondary and special Expert Centres (ECs) are funded to act as hubs for up to 23 partner schools • ECs are funded to operate for four terms on a rolling basis to maximise geographical coverage over the 5 years • Support provided by team of School Network Manager, 4 National Leaders and 17 Local Advisors

  14. Programme model: EC Support • ECs funded for up to 18 days of cover over 4 terms • ECs will provide one support session (probably twilight) per half term e.g. • Welcome/induction • Embedding the GLP across the curriculum • Successful strategies from other schools • Local Advisors will run the support session with the GLP Coordinator who will lead the programme in each Expert Centre • We anticipate that GLP coordinators in Expert Centres will aspire to Lead Practitioner status

  15. Expert Centres Ossett Academy, Wakefield Pearson Primary School, Hull Thirsk School, North Yorkshire Richmond School, North Yorkshire Huntcliff School, Redcar &Cleveland Greenfield Community College, Durham

  16. GLP Model: CPD for Partner Schools

  17. Programme model: e-credits • Partner schools access e-credits with a cash value of up to £500 to buy CPD from training providers • Approved courses featured on the GLP website • Schools select their courses, complete their contact details and click on the ‘book this course’ button • Course providers then liaise directly with schools

  18. Phased funding model

  19. Challenging but feasible! • Development Education Consortium designed and ran Shape the Future Competition for all UK secondary schools from January to March, 2013 • 5 schools presented their proposals to the Secretary of State on May 1st 2013 at the House of Commons • Winning school: Caroline Chisholm School, Northants • http://globaldimension.org.uk/news/item/17162
