Mr. Bean and Teddy are very good friends and they enjoy having adventures together. They woke up one morning and felt like going out for an adventure.
So Mr. Bean and Teddy got up out of bed, and thought about what they should go and do. "What shall we do today Teddy?" said Mr. Bean. Teddy sugested that they go out and go have a picnic. "That is an excellent idea Teddy!" Said Mr. Bean.
Mr. Bean and Teddy loaded up his little car with all they needed for the day, and got into his car and started their adventure.
They were driving when they came across a 90° slope in the road. Mr. Bean looked at Teddy and said, “Look Teddy! The road is a 90° trianglethat looks 4 feet high and 3 feet long! I'm not sure if my little car can make it up that slope! Lets figure out the missing side to see if we can make it!"
Teddy pulled out his caculator and realized that they needed to use the Pythagorean Theorem. C²=a²+b² x²=4²+3² x²=16+9 x²=25 x=5
"YES Teddy! That is superb!" We now know that the missing side is 5 feet and we'll be able to make it up the hill." Said Mr. Bean.
They continued along on their adventure very pleased that they figured out the missing angle of the triangle and made it up the slope.
While driving on their way, Mr. Bean noticed that the gas light had been on. "No! We are almost out of gas!" Said Mr. Bean. Mr. Bean looked out the window and saw a sign for a gas station that said the location of the gas station was (6,1) and also said that the sign was at the location (7,7)
Teddy quite brilliantly stated that they could use the distance formula to see if they would make it to the gas station. He made the gas station "A" the sign's location "B". length AB = √ (x²-x¹ )² + √ (y²-y¹)² = √ (7-6)² + (7-1)² = √ 1+36 = √ 37
"Brilliant Teddy!" Exclaimed Mr. Bean. "We will make it to the gas station because its only 37 miles away!"
Mr. Bean and Teddy made it to the gas station and filled his tiny little car. "I'm so glad we made it Teddy!" said Mr. Bean. And then once his car was full, they continued on their adventure.
They continued along until they found a nice spot beside a river. They parked their car on one side and deceided to walk across the bridge. They needed to get all their things for their picnic across the bridge so Teddy came up with the idea of carrying the supplies half way and meeting Mr. Bean half way.
Mr. Bean came up with the idea of using the midpoint of line segment to find out where half was on the bridge to meet Teddy.
Using Mr. Bean's Smartphone, he looked up the location of each of the bridge's ends so he could use the midpoint of a line segment equation. He found out that the bridges ends were (6,8),"A", and (4,6), "B". Midpoint AB= x¹+x² y¹+y² 2 2 6+4 8+6 2 2 10 14 2 2 =(5,7)
Mr . Bean and Teddy found out that the bridge's center was (5,7). "Hooray Teddy!" Said Mr. Bean. "We can now carry all of our things across the bridge!"
So they carried all of their things across the bridge and started to look for a good place to set up all their things.
On the other side of the bridge, Mr. Bean and Teddy found a good spot to set up all their things. They put down their blanket and were about to put everything on when they realized it all might not fit. "Oh no Teddy! It may not all fit on the blanket!" Said Mr. Bean. Again Teddy came up with the brilliant idea of using a Quadratic Equation to see if all of their things would fit on the blanket.
"Yes Teddy! Perfect! That will work excellent!" Said Mr. Bean. "If our rectangular blanket is 10 cm more than the width, and the area is 200 cm², we need to determine the dimensions of our blanket." x+10 x
x+10 Let x be the width A=lw 200=(x+10)x a=x (=1) 200=x² +10x b=10 x 0=x²+10x-200 c=-200 x=-b±√b²-4ac 2a x=-10±√10²-4(x)(-200) 2(x) x=-10±√100+800 2 x=-10±√900 2 x= -10+√900 x=-10-√900 2 2 x= 10 x=-20 - (Can't be negative) Therefore the width is 10ft, and the length is 20ft
The Blanket is 10ft wide and 20 ft long so they will have just enough room to fit all their feast on their blanket. "Hooray!" Shouted Mr. Bean.
They ate their feast with great delieght and then laid in the sun and just enjoyed themselves. After relaxing for a while, they packed up and headed back towards the car. Once they got back to the car, they drove off towards their next destination.
"What shall we do now Teddy?" Asked Mr. Bean. Teddy sugested that they go to the swimming pool. " I do like the sounds of that Teddy!" Exclaimed Mr. Bean. So they headed off towards the nearest public swimming pool.
Once at the pool, Mr. Bean and Teddy got into the pool and realized how glorious the water was. Mr. Bean saw a slide and decieded that he would go down it. Once he got there, he wanted to know the slope of the slide to see if he could handle it.
He asked the lifeguard what the location of the top and end of the slide were so he could figure out the slope. They told him that the top was (8,6) and the bottom was (2,4).
He then used the slope formula and figured out what the slope would be. m=(y²-y¹) (x²-x¹) =(4-6) (2-8) = -2 -6 =2 6
"Thats not very big of a slope at all! I can do that easy!" Exclaimed Mr. Bean as he went down the slide. Once in the water again, he looked around the room and saw that Teddy had already gotten out and was drying off. Mr. Bean decieded that he would do the same.
Once all dried off, Mr. Bean and Teddy went back out the car and got in. "What do you propose we do now Teddy?" Asked Mr. Bean. Teddy suggested that they should start making their way back towards their house. Mr. Bean agreed and started off towards home.
Driving on their way back, they see a sign that has fallen back that creates a ramp in the shape of a triangle. "Look Teddy! There is a jump! I'm going to hit it!" Shouted Mr. Bean.
Teddy recomended that Mr. Bean should check to see if the ramp is too big because if it is, it may result in them hurt and or their car damaged. Mr. Bean sighed but agreed and pulled over.
Using his tape measure, he found out that the ramp was 6 feet high, had a 90° angle, and 8 feet long. He came to the conclusion that he would have to use Cosine law to see what the ramp's one side was. A x 6ft 90°- C 8 ft B
So Mr. Bean used the Cosine Law. <C=90° C²=a²+b²-2ab cos C b=6 C²=8²+6²-2(8)(6) cos (90) a=8 C=√100 c=? C=10 A 10 6ft 90°- C 8 ft B
Mr. Bean quite joyfully ran back to the car. "Its safe Teddy! Were going to hit the jump!"Exclaimed Mr.Bean. Mr. Bean put the gas pedal to the floor and went racing towards the jump. They hit the jump and went flying through the air laughing the whole way.
They landed the jump with a loud thud and lots laughter. Very glad they just did that, they continued along on their way.
They continued along on their way, still silently laughing to themselves about the jump. They were going down a street when they see a man in a suit holding up a sign saying, "If you can answer a math question you will win a great prize!". Mr. Bean and Teddy looked at each other and decieded that it would be worth a shot.
So they pulled over beside the man and told him that they would be up for the challenge. Looking very pleased, the man pulled out a peice of paper and handed it to Mr. Bean. Mr. Bean read the paper aloud. "Answer this question to win a excellent prize" "Solve the following systems of equations by elimination." a.) 4x+3y=18 2x-3y=-6
"Oh yes I remember this! I can do this easy. Watch Teddy!" said Mr. Bean. 4x+3y=18 1.) 2x-3y=-6 2.) 6x+0=12 6x=12 x=12 6 x=2 Sub x=2 into 1.) 4(2)+3y=18 8+3y=18 3y=18-8 3y=10 y=10 3 Therefore (2, 10) 3
"Yes! I did it Teddy!" Exclaimed Mr. Bean. "Congratulations!" Beamed the man in the suit. "Your prize is 20 dollars! Unless, you answer a grand math question to improve your prize" Said the man in the suit. "Oh my Teddy! We could get a BIGGER prize! Yes of course we will do it" said Mr. Bean. "Alrighty then. Your next question is:" A rectangle is defined by the verticies A(-10,12), B(26,0), C(9,12), and D(-18,-12). Prove that all the diagonals are equal in length. C D B A
"Okay lets see... what to do what to do.." said Mr. Bean. Teddy hinted that he should use verifying geometric properties. "Oh yes Teddy of course" said Mr. Bean. Length BD=√(x²-x¹ )² + √ (y²-y¹)² =√(-18-26)²+(-12-0)² =√-44²+(-12)² =√1936+144 =√2080 =45.6 Length AC=√(x²-x¹ )² + √ (y²-y¹)² =√(-18-(10)²+(-24-12)² =√28²+36² =√784+1296 =√2080 =45.6 Therefore the diagonals are the same length
"Genius!" Exclaimed the man in the suit. "Why thank you" said Mr. Bean. "As for your prize, 50 dollars!" said the man in suit. "Hooray!" shouted Mr. Bean. They took their prize money, thanked the man very much, and headed off for home.
When Mr. Bean and Teddy were just about home, Mr. Bean spotted a skate boarding park. "Look Teddy! I want to go try that!" said Mr. Bean. So they pulled over, got out and went over. Conveniently, there was a old abandoned skateboard laying in the grass. So Mr. Bean grabbed it and tried to use the park. The first one he came to was in the shape of a triangle and looked quite amusing. "It looks pretty steep for a beginner so I`ll use the Tangent ratio to find out if i`ll be able to manage or not" said Mr. Bean. x 35° 12m
tan = O A tan35°=x 12 x 12 tan 35°=x 35° 8.4m=x 12m
"Excellent! It will be just fine" said Mr. Bean. After Mr. Bean did the triangular ramp he was wanting to do, he skated around for a while, put the skate board back where he found it, and headed home with Teddy.
They pulled into their house, parked their car outside went inside. "That was a excellent day Teddy" said Mr. Bean. Teddy agreed with him. They went inside their house and sat down. "I suppose I will go make some tea for us" said Mr. Bean. As he went into his kitchen he saw that his one of his triangular cubards has somehow fallen off during the day when he was out. "No! I suppose I will have to replace it" said Mr. Bean. So he deceided that he would have to get another similar match for his other one. He realized he would have to use similar trianlges to get the measurments.
ABC≈ XYZ AC = AB = CB XZ XY ZY x = 25 6 10 x=150 110 x=15 A X x 25 6 10 C Z B 8 Y
So Mr. Bean went quickly to the store, grabbed a new cubard with the measurments he got, then went back to the house and put it on.
After a long and exciting day, Mr. Bean and Teddy called it a day and headed for bed. "Goodnight Teddy" said Mr. Bean as they were drifting off, only to wake the next day and have another exciting adventure. THE END
