  2. Definition • This is the technique of building ceramic forms by rolling out coils, or ropes, of clay and joining them together with the fingers or a tool.

  3. Assignment • Your mission should you choice to accept it is to create a cylinder out of coils and turn it into a Tiki lantern. • Requirements • Forehead Design • Chin Design • Eyes • Nose • Mouth • Area that is cut out • Raised and Carved surfaces

  4. ProjectGoal & Learning Objectives GLE 1.1.2: Creates analyzes and evaluates the elements of visual arts when producing a work of art. Elements of Visual Arts: Shape and Form GLE 1.1.7: Creates, analyzes, and evaluates repetition/pattern, contrast, variety, balance, movement/rhythm, proportion, emphasis/dominance, and harmony/unity in a work of art. Visual Arts-Principles of Design [Symmetry] GLE 1.2.1: Analyzes and applies the skills and techniques of visual arts to create original works of arts in two and/or three dimensions. Develop Skills and Technique

  5. Instructions 5 inches • Create a base for your piece about 5” in diameter. • Begin to roll coils • Spread your hands for even coverage • Make sure to roll all the way around the coil [DON’T ROCK IT!] ½ inch

  6. Tips for Success • Use the 4 S’s • Score • Slip • Smash • Smooth • Cut openings in cylinder • Avoid cutting too low

  7. What Makes a Tiki? • Defined by… • Fierce Look • Exaggerated Features • Large Eyes • Eyebrows • Nose with Nostrils • Mouth with Teeth • Lines and Graphic Texture

  8. Grading Rubric Graded on a 3, 2, 1, 0 scale X 2 [Maximum points = 30] • Craftsmanship • Detail/Creativity • Symmetry • Face Characteristics • Raised and Curved Surfaces

  9. Final Project • Turn in a bisqued coil Tiki Lantern (30 pts) • Rough draft drawing with teacher signature and student name (1 bonus point) • Self Evaluation with response and reflection • You have the option to glaze but it won’t be graded
