Usage of Water On Regular Basis • People use lots of water for drinking, cooking and washing but even more for producing things such as food, paper and cotton cloth. • A water footprint is an indicator that looks at both the direct and indirect water use of a consumer or producer. • The water footprint of an individual, community or business is defined as the total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the goods and services consumed by the individual or community or produced by the business.
Why Conserve Water • Water conservation means using our water wisely and caring for it properly. Since each of us depends on water for life, it is our responsibility to learn more about water conservation and how we can help keep our water pure and safe for generations to come. • Ninety - seven percent of all the water on the earth is salt water which is not suitable for drinking. Only three percent of all the water is fresh water, and only one percent is available for drinking water. The other two percent is locked in ice caps and glaciers. • Saving water now means having water available in the future for recreational purposes, too. Conserving the water we have, minimizes the effects of water shortages and helps build a better defense against future drought years. • There are many things that we can do to help preserve Washington's water. These are not things that are hard. All it takes is a little bit of extra effort, and soon it will be second nature. • It is a job for the every day person who just likes to have access to the life sustaining resource of water. We must all recognize that water conservation really is our personal responsibility and not just leave it up to other people.
Different uses of Water • We use water for many, many different things like making electricity, cleaning, cooking, irrigating, etc. • People must conserve water so that it will be available to people for years to come. • It is important that we save water because it is essential to sustain life of fishes and aquatic wildlife. • We need to conserve water so that our trees and plants can have life.
Different ways of Conserving • When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. • Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings. • Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful. • Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants. • Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you'll save up to 150 gallons per month. • Collect water from your roof to water your garden.
Designate one glass for your drinking water each day or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash. • Install a rain sensor on your irrigation controller so your system won't run when it's raining. • Use drip irrigation for shrubs and trees to apply water directly to the roots where it's needed. • Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean. • Use a commercial car wash that recycles water. • Bathe your young children together. • Washing dark clothes in cold water saves both on water and energy while it helps your clothes to keep their colors. • Report broken pipes, open hydrants and errant sprinklers to the property owner or your water provider.
To save water and time, consider washing your face or brushing your teeth while in the shower. • Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up or runs. Use this water to flush toilets or water plants. • Water only when necessary.
