  2. Britain: • Needs money to re-build • Lloyd George promised returning military a Britain “fit for heroes” • Wanted German colonies • Wanted to keep power in Europe balanced

  3. France: • Wanted revenge on Germany • Does not want another war • Suffered the most in WW I • Wanted to change the balance of power in Europe

  4. Italy: • Switched sides during the war in return for a promise of land • Wants the land

  5. United States: • Wants “Peace without Victory” • A League of Nations

  6. Did anyone get what they wanted??

  7. The Treaty of Versailles emasculated Germany • Redrew the map of Germany • Parceled German colonies out to European Allies

  8. The Treaty: • Weakened Germany • Militarily and economically • Germany had to pay reparations and disband their military

  9. Was the Treaty Fair?? • Why did Germany sign it?? • They did not have a choice!
