Desired Outcomes • Based on the needs of students, the comprehension strategy of Inferring was chosen. • Guiding Question – How will students be able to connect their prior knowledge with clues from the text in order to develop inferential thinking ?
Text Selection • These students have difficulty with vocabulary . Because of this , I chose a wordless picture book Mysteries of Harris Burdick. The text frees the student to infer by using his prior knowledge and clues from a richly detailed picture without having the difficulty of unknown vocabulary slowing down their ability to comprehend .
TEACHER Shows a picture Asks why they created their story and explains their story is their inference . Asks question Creates an oral story Shares story Developing awareness of using prior knowledge + clues from picture = Inference STUDENT Supporting Students with Scaffolding of Instruction Modeling

Independent Application Students share their three column chart explaining how they used prior knowledge and clues from picture to make an inference TEACHER STUDENT Selects a picture and shares story after recording thinking on a three column chart Listens to others stories and asks thoughtful questions about the inferencing process
+ Strengths Students were excited about book selection and process of inferring with a picture Modeling with a graphic organizer [three column chart] helped visual learners see first how inferencing works Changes Instruction over several days would allow me to model extensively and encourage a rich oral discussion to build their vocabulary I would select pictures with themes more aligned to students’ prior knowledge Reflection
