  2. Marie Stopes Clinic Marie Stopes International is the UK's leading provider of sexual and reproductive healthcare services. Their health clinics see over 100,00 men and women each year who go to them for treatment and advice Their services include; The Abortion pill, Contraception, STI Testing, health screening and much more.

  3. On the 18th of October the Marie Stopes clinic was opened in Belfast. This caused a lot of controversy as the clinic provides abortions. About 200-300 people gathered to protest at the opening of the private sexual health clinic in Belfast The Stop Marie Stopes Campaign is organised by Precious Life and the protest was based in Great Victoria’s street Marie Stopesclinic opens in Belfast

  4. Abortions are against the Catholic and Protesant religion and they are still a big influence in Ireland. There is a moral issue. Each person has their own moral opinion. It’s a serious matter and people have very strong opinions on abortions Reasons for protest

  5. Reasons for opening the Clinic If a woman wants to have an abortion it is her right to do so as it is her own choice. If its under serious circumstances such as rape or the mothers/childs’ life is in danger . About 4,000 women from the Republic still go to the UK every year for abortions.

  6. Legality The services being offered by the Marie Stopes clinic are in line with current legislation in Northern Ireland. Terminations can only be carried out in Northern Ireland in cases where continuing the pregnancy would have a serious, permanent or long-term effect on the physical or mental health of the woman. The Clinic only gives terminations up to 9 weeks of pregnancy.

  7. Eligibility for termination There are several steps before abortion can be given The clinic will refer the expectant mother to the family counselling service. 2 Medical assessments will be done. If meeting the criteria, abortion pills will be provided.

  8. Conclusion By having the clinic in Belfast, women will be closer to home when seeking an abortion. The women won’t be as stressed as they won’t be forced to travel to the UK.
