Today’s Learning Goal • I will review the writing process and make revisions to my essay by completing a self-assessment of my draft. • I will evaluate proper grammatical usage of commas, parallel structure, and semicolons by using the grammar lessons in my writing packet.

WRITING AND REVISING • Connecting Your Ideas: • Used your prewriting exercises as a guide when you wrote your rough draft • Improving Your Writing: • Review your rough draft and decide if it offers your readers a thorough and engaging examination of the subject. Add, cut, rearrange, and rewrite parts as necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS • Use the Revision worksheet to complete a guided revision of your rough draft. • Read each question and double check every sentence in your draft if necessary.
EDITING AND PROOFREADING • Check for style • Review your revised writing to make sure all your sentences read smoothly and clearly • Check to make sure you have used the best words to express your ideas (diction) • Avoid repetition of ideas and similar words • Check for accuracy • Correct any errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Comma Rules: Use a comma to— • Separate a list of at least three items • Separate quotations from the speaker • To combine 2 ideas into a single sentence • If your sentence has more than 2 ideas, it is most likely a “run-on” sentence. • Separate introductory phrases from the rest of the sentence • Show the relationship between a word and a noun phrase that follows • Separate two complete sentences joined by a conjunction • And, but, so, or, for, yet
