  1. What is the best office design going into 2023 2023 is going to be a year of change for many businesses. Office design is one way to reflect changes in the business, as well as the different expectations that have been created after several years of flexible and hybrid working. While office design always needs to be functional, elements that implement more focus on comfort and wellbeing are also increasingly important. These are some key elements of office design to consider going into 2023. • Using more sustainable and eco-friendly materials in office design is key to reflecting wider commitments to a business’ ESG policy. Many organisations today are looking to reinforce messaging to customers and employees through changes like this. Think products that are made from 100% recycled materials instead of just low priced; energy efficient lighting; and furniture that is designed to be long-lasting and versatile, rather than a short-term fix. • Smart offices. Given the hybrid working models many organisations have shifted to today, technology and smart spaces are vital to office design in 2023. Office design should integrate tech features and create the opportunity for all needs to be met, including video conferencing spaces and optimum connectivity. • Open plan interiors. Because they offer such potential for collaboration, open plan interiors remain popular. Combining functionality and style is the key here, creating smart spaces that are enhanced by original building features – such as exposed brickwork or industrial designs – and the addition of statement pieces like pendant lights. • Biophilic elements. Given the focus on wellbeing it’s no surprise that the best office design going into 2023 is going to include an element of bringing nature indoors. Humans have an innate connection with nature and offices that have more plants and greenery create more calming spaces for employees and tend to help with wellness and performance. The right lighting is also crucial for improving the way the workforce functions. With more natural light we tend to perform better during the day and sleep better at night so this is another key element of natural wellness in office design going forward. • Offices that adjust. New working methods and practices are placing the emphasis firmly on flexibility and versatility in office design in 2023. It’s not just about desks and a canteen but also creating other areas that staff can use for different ways of working, from spaces that

Capital allowances offer tax relief for businesses and can be an important consideration during the process of office redesign. For example, items such as furniture, certain fixtures, computers and machines can all come within the category of plant and machinery, which can attract tax relief. It’s worth noting that there are super deductions available for companies investing in qualifying new plant and machinery between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2023. This is up to 130% on most new plant and machinery. The relief only applies to incorporated businesses. Office design in 2023 is going to reflect changes in attitudes, working models and commitments to sustainability and wellness in the workplace today.
