Cannibalism Is cannibalism okay? By: Deana Van Brocklin
Donner Party • Left in April of 1846 with 9 covered wagons. • Left to make their way to California from Illinois. • Tried to take a shortcut through the Great Basin. • Should’ve taken 3 months but took a year. • Got stuck in Sierra mountains in the snow. • They hunted everything they could until nothing more was left but human. • The Donner Party was forced to turn to cannibalism to survive the harsh conditions they were in.
The Case of R .vs. Dudley and Stephens • Happened in 1884. • 4 crew members on an English yacht, the Mignonette. • Cast away in a storm leaving them stranded1,600 miles from Cape of Good Hope. • They drank sea water and ate everything they could. • After several days a crew member fell unconscious from famine and dehydration and the others (one personally unwilling) decided to kill him and eat him. • They were picked up four days later.
Soviet Victory at Stalingrad • Happened in 1943 • 100,000 German soldiers were taken POW. • Almost all were taken to POW camps in Siberia or Central Asia. • They were abused as well as starved and some even resorted in cannibalism to survive. • Reports of cannibalism started to show in winter of 1941-1942, after all birds, rats, and pets were eaten by survivors. • Only 5,000 survived.
How are they alike compared to the Donner Party? • They were all stranded somewhere with no source of food. • They all ate what they could that wasn’t human until it was gone. • All of them would’ve died with no help if they didn’t find some source of food. • Cannibalism was a last resort for all of them. • They only fed off the dead. • People survived by resorting in this source of food.
How are they different from the Donner Party? • All in different time eras. • Different situations • The Donner party was people of all ages and the other two were just older people. • Someone had to die first for anyone to decide to resort in cannibalism.
