Recap of situation (from IEFC workshop) • Orbit measurements • PS instrumentation status • List of measurements and studies • Resources • Milestones (tentative) Acknowledgements: O. Brüning, P. Collier, R. Garoby, S. Gilardoni, V. Mertens, R. Jones and BI experts MTE status and plans M. Giovannozzi MG - PO BEMB 27/06/2011
Recap of situation • The effects that blocked MTE in 2010 • Activation of septum 16 • Fluctuation of trapping efficiency in the PS • Injection trajectories fluctuations in SPS • Action plan from IEFC workshop: • Initially mainly focus on the PS to • Studies for new extraction scheme • Closure of slow bump and stability of extraction conditions. • Tests of energy fluctuations, POPS, etc. • We should aim at drawing conclusions on new extraction/dummy septum by June/July this year. • Then resume SPS injection to study • Injection (trajectory, optics) • Overall performance Delay of ~ two months on these items MG - PO BEMB 27/06/2011
Orbit measurements • Create stables islands and kick a pencil beam in one island to check orbit stability: large cycle-to-cycle fluctuations observed • Crash programme to find source and, in parallel, check whether this was a measurement artifact. • Last Thursday BI experts found the solution! Units are tenths of mm! Different colours refer to different cycles Same scale as previous case: fluctuations have disappeared Now, the real measurements can start! MG - PO BEMB 27/06/2011
PS instrumentation status (MTE) • Instrumentation not (always) performing to (pushed?) needs of MTE. • Decision to team up with LIU. • Meeting organised with Rhodri: • Technical issues (in particular of orbit measurement) • Structure for follow up of technical issues • POPS reconnection and tune measurement issue • Orbit measurement seems currently operational. • Next systems to be used: • Tune measurement • BCTs in TT2 • (FWS are already being reviewed because of LIU and LHC beams) Tune measurement with POPS: Noise on pick-up or also effect on beam? MG - PO BEMB 27/06/2011
List of measurements and studies - I • Trajectory fluctuations in SPS • Closure of bumps (slow and fast) in the PS • New extraction scheme using SEH31 • Pursue studies • Trapping fluctuations • Measure cycle-to-cycle reproducibility of chromaticity at flat top. • Setting up of trapping, crossing resonance from above at 14 GeV/c. This requires changing the signs of octupoles and hence Q’’>0 (this allows testing whether local negative Q’ might be a source of fluctuations). • Setting up of trapping, crossing resonance at 2 GeV. This configuration is below transition energy, hence Q’<0 for stability. Hence Q’’<0 (as we have now) should not be an issue. Furthermore, we might get rid of PWFs and F8L. • Setting up a transverse splitting in SPS? MG - PO BEMB 27/06/2011
List of measurements and studies - II • New extraction scheme using SEH31 • QKE is mandatory to close the fast bump (not good for aperture). • Check trajectory extracted beamlets. • Extraction of fifth turn. • Dummy septum in SS15 • Check extraction trajectories for MTE in SS15. • Check also trajectories of other fast extractions (e.g., nTOF and LHC). • Relocation of g-jump quadrupole. • Very pertinent comment by Oliver at the IEFC workshop: source of SPS trajectory fluctuations should not affect PS trajectories in SS15! • Faster kickers option • Mainly for ABT, ABP to check the impact on losses. Resources • Beam dynamics studies: • extremely small group of people: • Fraction of two staff • 1 fellow (re-oriented to MTE from PS2 studies in March 2011) • 1 fellow (ending in October) • 1 PhD starting in September (to be trained) • PS activities: • we rely heavily on OP for setting up (this year for the new extraction studies) and systematic data taking. • SPS activities: • We depend critically on OP for pushing the setting up and the studies at the. However, we do not consider to resume these activities before the end of the summer. MG - PO BEMB 27/06/2011
Milestones (tentative) • POPS reconnection might impact on MTE. • To gain flexibility it is proposed not to restrict KFA21 polarity change to injectors’ TS (time required ~1 h access – carefully planned). • End of Aug./Beg of Sep.: report on electrostatic septum extraction scheme and losses vs. kickers’ rise time. • End of September: results on special configurations for trapping. • October: SPS tests. • November: conclusions on dummy septum.
