  1. Welcome! What was the most interesting thing about the Maasai people that you learned in our last class? Why, explain your answer.

  2. Climate in Horn of Africa • Extremely arid, meaning that there is limited access to water • Most places in the Horn of Africa receive less than 5 inches of water every year • What potential problems could this cause for the people living here?

  4. Climate in the Horn of Africa • Nomadic living – people move to new locations to try and get basic resources • How does nomadic living keep people from gaining a sustainable income?

  5. The Cycle • Essentially, the people living in the Horn of Africa are stuck in a cycle of poverty. LIMITED WATER LIMITED FOOD INABILITY TO CREATE SOLUTIONS INSUFFIECIENT ACCESS TO JOBS AND EDUCATION NEED TO MOVE

  6. Potential Solutions • What are some potential solutions to stopping this cycle of poverty and starvation in the Horn of Africa? • You will have 15 minutes to strategize with your classmates in groups of 2-3 people. Be sure to come up with at least one solution for each part of the cycle, but try to get three solutions for each. THINK HARD! BE CREATIVE! WHAT WILL IT TAKE?! The possibilities are endless.

  7. Florence Wambugu • Next we will read a passage on Florence Wambugu. • You will answer the questions on your notes and turn them in at the end of class.
