Early Start • The first people lived in England around 45000 BC • 6500 BC sea levels from English Channel cut area off from France, making the British Isles • About 2500 BC during the Neolithic (new stone age) Stonehenge was finished • 43 AD, Romans arrived • 50 AD city of London established • Vikings invaded around 793 AD • Westminster Abbey completed in 1055 • In 1078 the Tower of London is in the process of being built
1600’s • Elizabeth I death in 1603 • Succeed by King James I of England • 1605 Catholic associates attempted to blow up King • First English Civil War in 1642 • Monarchy restored in 1660 • King Charles I beheaded in 1649 • 1652-1654 tea first arrives from China • Great Fire of London 1666 • 1689 Bill of Rights were passed • 1603-1714 enters a period of civil war
1700’s • Act of Settlement 1701 requires monarch to be Protestant • England enters the War of the Spanish Succession • King William III dies, succeeded by Queen Anne • Acts of Union passed in 1707 which create The Kingdom of Great Britain (England and Scotland) • King George I takes over the throne later succeeded by son King George II • “Rule, Britannia” was written in 1740 • 1744 attempted French invasion fails • Britain signs Treaty of Warsaw • Seven Years War was declared • 1766 Boston Tea Party in North America revolt against British • King George III takes over
1800’s • 1801 Act of Union creates the United Kingdom • 1807 Britain abolishes slave trade • King George III dies and is succeeded by George IV • Great Reform Act changes parliamentary representation • Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species” published in 1859 • Queen Victoria became Britain’s longest ruling monarch (1837-1901) • Prime Minister and Parliament became more powerful • Country moved towards a democratic system • London Underground opens in 1863
1900’s • 1914-1918 Britain and it’s allies defeat Germany in WWI • WW II, Prime Minister Winston Churchill leads Britain to victory against Germany, Japan, and Italy • Queen Elizabeth II takes on the thrown to which her reign still lives on to this day • In 1979 Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first female Prime Minister • Britain gives China control over Hong Kong • In 1997 the tragic death of Diana, The Princess of Wales stuns the world
