How do faculty succeed? • UF Missions: • Research • Education • Patient Care • Service – not a basis for promotion • Align your effort and assignment! • Success will be measured according to your assignment
Planning for Promotion • Starts on hire • Importance of assignment • Maintain your CV! • www.aamc.org/download/53260/data/cvtemplate
Tenure at UF • Tenure “provides a benefit to the individual by supporting academic freedom.” • Tenure assures the faculty member immunity from reprisals or threats due to an intellectual position or belief which may be unpopular. • Tenure benefits the institution: • Creating a climate supportive of open discussion • Encouraging faculty to invest time in improving the institution • Providing a benefit to individuals that encourages them to remain in the profession and at the institution
Tenure, cont’d • Because tenure is a “lifetime” commitment by an institution to an individual, the bar to achieve tenure is higher than that for hiring or promotion, although the criteria often are the same. Outside the US and Canada, most universities no longer offer tenure. • Those with tenure have the right to recommend the award of tenure to others, although the institution makes the ultimate decision on tenure (in UF’s case, the Board of Trustees decides, acting on the President’s recommendation). • Because tenure is a protected status, the bar is high for revocation – UF Regulation 7.019(2)(a)
Tenure • Does not guarantee position, salary, or space • Rarely awarded upon hire • Tenure accruing positions require a substantive research assignment.
7. What about mentoring? • Finding Good Mentoring • Why? • Who? • What? • When? • Where? • How
Finding Good Mentoring: Why? • You are not alone • You shouldn’t have to rediscover how everything works • UF policy • Experience is helpful • Which committees? • Which research program? • Which collaborators
Who? Mentor ≠ Role Model Mentor ≠ Friend Identify multiple mentors Research interests/ Research expertise Successful within institution Successful in the field Successful in professional life Has navigated the waters Man or woman mentor? -- Both
What? Time to discuss choices and review plans, outlines, abstracts. Research Department/Institutional Connections National opportunities Informal discussion of academic life, service and citizenship, traps to avoid, balancing family and career. Honest, unvarnished evaluations.
When? Formal quarterly or once per semester. Informal discussion when in angst,approach-avoidance, or discouraged.
Where? Their place, their convenience. Privately, could be over coffee or lunch.
How? – Per Keith Muller Just ask. The worst they can say is “No, go away.” If you do not ask, they will never say yes. Any “no” will be for fairness to others. Typically comes with excellent alternative. Many people think you show a lot of promise. Formalize it! Examples of mentor-mentee “compacts”
