  1. CIVITAS Forum 27-29 September 2010 Malmö (Sweden) Berlin-Potsdam - model region for electro-mobility Thomas Meissner, TSB Innovationsagentur Berlin GmbH

  2. Berlin-Potsdam – model region for electro-mobility Content • Background and context • Main characteristics of the model region Berlin-Potsdam • The sub projects of the model region • Intermediate results and experiences • Outlook and next steps CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  3. Background and context Berlin region is an attractive place for in-field testing of new propulsion systems and clean fuels • Natural Gas in national and EU projects, e.g. with the CIVITAS-1 project Tellus • Hydrogen and fuel cells, e.g. with the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) • Electro-mobility with the model region Berlin-Potsdam and further in-field tests CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  4. Main characteristics of the model region Berlin-Potsdam Berlin-Potsdam is one of the eight German model regions for electro-mobility • Model regions for electro-mobility is a programme of the Federal Ministry of Transport • 115 M€ for eight model regions with duration July 2009 – August 2011 • Development of electro-mobility as an integrated subject • Electric vehicles as part of new mobility services • New business models for transport operators • Contribution of electro-mobility to strategic objectives of the urban policies, e.g. climate protection and energy efficiency programmes, urban development plans, transport strategies CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  5. The model region is policy driven and bases on 3 thematic pillars NationalProgramme Coordination Project Coordination Berlin-Potsdam Regional Project Management Office Further PMOffices Demonstration Projects Integration of Mobility & Housing Services Integrationof City Logistics Integration of Public Transport & Tourism Further Projects promoting the Electromobility CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  6. Model region – sub projects BeMobility – integration of E-fleets into public transport • Integration into tariff structure of public transport • Vehicles and re-charging devices located at public transport stations • Operation of a public electric fleet • 40 cars • 50 Pedelecs • The E-fleet is equipped wit dedicated car sharing ICT • Key partners • Deutsche Bahn (coordinator) • Vattenfall, RWE, Bosch, TU Berlin • Start BeMobility field tests: June 2010 CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  7. Model region – sub projects WohnMobilE • Car sharing in city quarters • 20 Peugeot Ion are planned to be operated • In close cooperation with housing associations in Berlin and Potsdam • Car sharing operator: Greenwheels E-City Logistics • Demonstration of electric vehicles for efficient and environmentally friendly delivery services • In-field test 1: Retail delivery with 7,5 t trucks • In-field test 2: Courier services with 3,5 t box-type vans => Both sub projects launched in August 2010 CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  8. Electro-mobility – infrastructure issues Infrastructure for battery re-charging is a key factor • More than 100 re-charging devices are installed in Berlin • At the moment, the Berlin Senate is the most experienced authority with regard to efficient approval processes • The large scale integration of re-charging infrastructure into the urban development strategy is a key – Berlin intends to develop a corresponding guideline CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  9. Intermediate results and first experiences The MiniE Berlin project directly connected to the model region shows first results/experiences • The range (ca. 150 km) is sufficient for almost all urban operational needs • Operation under (strong) winter conditions is still a challenge => efficient auxiliary power provision represents a key issue • Before introducing intelligent vehicle-to-grid applications, the re-charging behaviour must be changed => awareness strategy CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner

  10. Outlook and next steps Achieving ambitious goals in market penetration demands for the bundling of efforts • The Berlin region is prepared to carry out large scale e-mobility fleet tests • Berlin administration is ready to further develop and to share its know how in terms of re-charging infrastructure development • New business models with new electro-mobility driven mobility services (incl. logistics) is essential factor • Transfer of experiences from national to EU level • Berlin region intends to use the field test experiences to generate industrial added value (engineering services, power train components, battery cells) CIVITAS Forum l27-29 September 2010 lMalmöl Thomas Meissner
