United Arab Emirates Traditions National Day- December 2nd marks the United Arab Emirates formal independence from the United Kingdom and the eventual unification of the seven emirates which formed the country. The holiday of Eid Al-Fitr marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan and the first day of the following month, after another new moon. The Eid falls after 29 or 30 days of fasting, per the lunar sighting. Eid Al-Fitr means the back to the fitrah; usually a special celebration is made. Presents are also given, mainly clothes and money. Ramadan- ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which lasts 29 or 30 days. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and smoking during daylight hours. It is intended to teach Muslims about patience, spirituality, humility. Muslims fast for the sake of God and to offer more prayer than usual. Compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards by about eleven days each year depending on the moon;
Historical Events The Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, was completed in January 2010. It became the world's tallest building at 2,716 feet (828 meters) and it was 160 stories. It contains the world's fastest elevators and is expected to use about 250,000 gallons of water per day. The British withdrew from the Persian Gulf in 1971, and the Trucial states became a federation called the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Two of the Trucial states, Bahrain and Oman, chose not to join the federation, reducing the number of states to seven UAE signed a military defense agreement with the U.S. in 1994 and one with France in 1995

Unique Places Ski Dubai is an indoor resort with 22,500 square meters of indoor ski area. It is a part of the Mall of the Emirates, one of the largest shopping malls in the world, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. In 2007 Ski Dubai was awarded the Thea Outstanding Achievement Award by the Themed Entertainment Association. Dubai's Clocktower is located in Deira. The Clocktower was erected as a symbol of Dubai and located in Deira because that was where major routes into Dubai converged prior to the building of Dubai - Abu Dhabi Road. The Deira clock tower can be reached by Dubai Metro. More Unique Places Burj Khalifa, known as Burj Dubai prior to its inauguration, is a skyscraper in Dubai, and is currently the tallest manmade structure in the world, at 829.84 m (2,723 ft). Construction began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009. The building officially opened on 4 January 2010 and is part of the new 2 km2 (490-acre) flagship development called Downtown Dubai. The total cost for the project was about US$1.5 billion; and for the entire "Downtown Dubai" development, US$20 billion. Subsequently, in a surprise move at its opening ceremony, the tower was renamed Burj Khalifa, said to honor the UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his crucial support
