Certification as a Clinical Lipid Specialist • Atherosclerotic events, including myocardial infarction and stroke, account for approximately one-third of all deaths in the U.S. • Lipid management with dietary, lifestyle, and pharmacologic modalities has been demonstrated to be one of the most effective strategies for the prospective treatment of cardiovascular disease. • Yet, the number of specialists with expertise in lipid management is inadequate to address this large population of patients. The American Board of Clinical Lipidology was established to encourage professional growth in the practice of Lipidology, and to enhance physician practice behavior to improve the quality of patient care.
Certification as a Clinical Lipid Specialist • The American Board of Clinical Lipidology is an independent certifying organization offering the onlycertification program for physicians specializing in Clinical Lipidology. • ABCL mission is to assess and validate the specialized knowledge and advanced training required to practice in the dynamic and complex field of Clinical Lipidology.
Who is a Lipid Specialist? • Physician lipid specialists come from a variety of backgrounds such as: • Internal Medicine • Cardiology • Endocrinology • Family Practice • Obstetrics & Gynecology • Preventive Medicine The ABCL certification program establishes a consistent benchmark of expertise in the field of Clinical Lipidology.
How to Apply • To become a Diplomate in Clinical Lipidology and • Demonstrate your professional commitment to lipid management and the prevention of the morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease • Validate your expertise for patients, external organizations, and professional colleagues Visit www.lipidboard.org for eligibility requirements and an application. • Examination Dates • September 29, 2007 - Minneapolis, MN • May 30 or May 31, 2008 – Seattle , WA
The development of a certification program for Clinical Lipid Specialists was spearheaded by the visionary leaders of the National Lipid Association. • In 2003, the ABCL was formed and incorporated as an independent certifying organization. • The two organizations will work closely together to ensure that there are adequate educational opportunities for lipid professionals to help them meet the prerequisites of the ABCL certifying examination.
Mission The mission of the National Lipid Association (NLA) is to enhance the practice of lipid management in clinical medicine. • Multidisciplinary membership based professional association • Education programs that focus on continuous growth and development • Social responsibility with respect to review and analysis of pending consumer issues and national medical policy • Cooperation with key organizations to achieve common goals • Public service focus to advance practice standards that emphasize positive patient outcomes
History of the NLA • Incorporated in November 2002 as a nonprofit professional association (501 c6) • Membership open to all health care professionals involved in lipid management (annual dues $50 –apply online at www.lipid.org) • Board members with regional and multidisciplinary representation • Regional chapters focus on education and community • Southeast Lipid Association • Northeast Lipid Association • Midwest Lipid Association • Southwest Lipid Association • Pacific chapter coming soon • NLA is recognized as a constituent society of the International Atherosclerosis Society
