Purpose of the Evening • Clarify expectations and key dates/events over the next two years • Explain how help and support is given to both students and parents • Meet key staff • Encourage fruitful partnership between school and parents to ensure success for all students in all aspects of school life

5. Academic Success • Summer 2013 results • 78% 5+ A*- C grades inc. En & Ma (2012 National = 59%) • 84% 5+ A*- C grades (2012 National = 82%) • 88% expected or better progress in English(2012 National = 68%) • 76% expected or better progress in Maths (2012 National = 69%) • 100% at least one qualification • Year on year rise in attainment for last 5 years!

Standards 2013 • Ofsted (September 2013) • Much of the teaching is good or better • Pockets of underachievement • The achievement of students who are disabled or who have special educational needs is improving and overall they make good progress • In a number of subjects students are not attaining consistently the highest grades of which they are capable

10. Assessment: Exams External • Final exams at the end of the course • JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) guidelines must be followed in all exams

11. Assessment Internal Exams • Allow students to gain exam experience • Used to assess progress, decide levels of entry and produce accurate forecast grades for post 16 applications

12. Assessment Controlled Assessment • Government directive - has replaced coursework • Integral and important part of GCSE exams • Control levels set by exam board and JCQ guidelines must be followed at all times See KS4 booklet for details of individual subjects

Partnerships • E.g. • Greenhead & New College have strict entry requirements for AS courses and other Level 3 courses: • Minimum of 5 A*-C grades including English Language (and Mathematics for some courses) in at least 4 different subjects • Additional subject specific requirements (e.g. most subjects ask for at least a ‘B’ if continuing to A level) • Kirklees college entry requirements depend on level and popularity of each course

23. Work Experience • 16 – 27 June 2014 (2 weeks) • Application forms to be completed in PSHE lessons during Spring term • Parents / carers asked to sign these

24. Work Experience • Students are encouraged to find their own placements where possible • Sample letters of introduction are available from PSHE teachers • Talk to family & friends to find out if anyone has a contact with a company who offers work experience placements

25. Finding a work placement • The most successful placements tend to be those which students have found for themselves • You can help by: • Having early discussions with them • Sitting with them when they make an enquiry • Give them something to say to help them break the ice on the first contact.

Supporting your child Striking a balance between respecting their personal space and guidance will be the key Offering help is often a less confrontational way of influencing people behaviour rather than issuing strict demands Negotiating compliance through rewards and greater freedoms can often work Showing interest in what they find interesting is a positive way of encouraging passion for learning

28. Partnership With Parents Your support and insight can be instrumental • Attendance is key • Punctuality • A Calm Working Environment • Distractions e.g. Social media sites, computer gaming • Access to ICT resources (memory sticks, library membership)

29. Good sleep is critical You can support your child’s sleep by: • Set times when games consoles, lap tops and phones are put aside. • If this becomes a real problem, then maybe consider taking these things from them or keeping them out of their bedroom. We are encountering an increasing number of children that have significant issues with sleep deprivation.

30. Partnership With Parents • Your support and insight can be instrumental • Use student planners • Keep bringing basic equipment • Encourage a culture to achieve • Encourage school and “time out” balance

31. Learning style Do you learn by: doing, listening or watching? Your learning style is your strength. Go with it whenever you can. When in a class, try to use your learning style. Being aware of your preferred learning style could help you decide which revision guides you use.
