Elementary Librarians Supporting Common Core Jim Belair, Ashlee Bryant, Dr. Kristen Driskill
Points to consider What changes are occurring in classroom instruction? In light of these changes, what do teachers need to know regarding resources, technology, etc. available to them? What am I currently doing to support teachers and the CCSS? What changes can I make to further support the teaching and learning in my school (short-term and long-term)?
But we are going to talk about one of the “shifts”… NY Dept. of Education: Shift 1: Balancing Informational and Literary Texts Shift 3: Staircase of Text Complexity Student Achievement Partners: “Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts”
How does the Common Core define complex text? 3-Part Model
Quantitative Measures:A Good First Step Observable & Measurable: Word frequency, sentence length, and word count (lexile.com, 2011)
Qualitative Measures • Purpose • Structure • Language • Knowledge Demands
Online Databases • Locate high quality Informational Text • Teachers need to know how to locate info! • Teachers can put articles into a Resource List • Mindset Shift: Databases are building wide not just library items • Many Databases contain lexiles
Information Fluency Continuum • Grade Level Benchmark Skills • Inquiry Based Learning • Aligned to Common Core Standards • All the Graphic Organizers are on the SLS Website • Endorsed by SLSA and most SLS Councils
Module 1: Unlocking the text Module 2/3: Author’s craft Module 4: Text Integration

Support what is taking place in the classroom Know your Standards! What are you doing?
Support what is taking place in the classroom • When teaching Destiny, align to what is taking place in classroom • When teaching parts of a book, find out what they are reading in classroom • When teaching Inquiry Based Learning- find out what topics are being discussed in classroom
Build Resource Lists by topic and include lexileditems • Pick one thing to share at each faculty meeting • Collaborate with other librarians
Collaboration Strategies Find a way to plan and work with the teachers! I know…you don’t have the time…but…you have to find the time!
Collaboration ideas • Larger districts, break up grade levels btwn different librarians • Be part of grade level email list and get the minutes • Pick one grade level a month to visit • Attend the lead teachers for grade levels meeting • Seek out the teachers! • Be creative • Do not focus on those who will never use the library!!!
Paddy Hill Library Example • http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/webpages/phlibrary/resources1.cfm • Password: paddyhill
eBooks • http://www.monroe2boces.org/ebooks • All eBooks can be placed in Resource List • All are unlimited Simultaneous Use • New eBook vendor for 1:1 Popular Fiction Axis 360 from Baker & Taylor • Current Vendors: • InfoBase Learning • Gale Cengage • ebrary • Marshall Cavendish • Rosen • Sylvan Dell • Capstone Interactive
