  3. Bad news.. • After August 15th, the PEP2 will be finished and will close down through to mid Sep 15th all accounts, staff and other matters. • All staff and resources will then pass over to Philippines 2 – set to start September 5

  4. Good news • We have some limited funds for an Alumni program, but may be able to support some activities in 2012 that builds on your campaigns

  5. Alumni • You will all be “Rare’s founding members of an Alumni Network for the Philippines” (after Module 4 / closing ceremony) • Alumni program will be demand driven, support is very limited (one person – 30% time probably) each will take your own initiative • Joint fund raising • Maintenance of Rareplanet • Finding opportunities to share SM • Other opportunities that you may want to explore

REEF RANGERS Pride Ambassador • Continue the movement for sustainable fisheries in the country • Become Ambassador for events – invite for speaking engagements – help in the background, communicate and collaborate with Rare and conservation fellows in Philippines 2, coordinated mascot events, conferences etc. • Media opportunities / profile for Social Marketing as a development tool for NRM in the Philippines • Continue with Rareplanet – blogs and activities • Part of a Global network of 215 individuals

  7. General Responsibilities for Alumni A Philippine PRIDE Ambassador “What are the Qualities, Roles and Responsibilities of a PRIDE Ambassador” 10 minute - Workshop Write up qualities, roles and responsibilities Present to the group

  8. A PROPOSED FRAMEWORK FOR ALUMNI • As suggested in the last retreat – each Reef Ranger would become an Ambassador. Additional Bonus options (100% demand driven – if you are interested) • Option 1– Institutional Ambassador • Option 2 – Executive / Flagship Ambassador • Option 3 - Alumni Ambassador

  9. Bonus Option 1: Institutional Ambassador Institutional Ambassador – Institutionalizing SM in your LAP - Support for SM in other sectors within your LAP • “Reef to Ridge” • Upland / Waste management / NGA / NGO programs – Media support • Other activities

Bonus Option 2: Executive Ambassador On the Ground Ambassador - Support for Phils 2 / Rare events • Edu tourism events, host X visits and education tours, build up country capacity • Offer Mentorship/ Events  for Phils 2 – become a Sister City / town with local campaign areas • Conduct actual activities with Rare – training and events and curriculum roll out (SM lite and curriculum) building on the tools you have perfected in Phils 1 – Radio, Posters, mascots, events, MPA governance and enforcement etc etc. • Help with materials, referrals and help fast track the learning curve for Phils 2 and beyond

Bonus Option 3: Alumni Ambassador Continue campaign – focused on Turfs, MPA networks • Counterpart – time and staff • Focus on MEAT – improving MPA rating in at least 2 MPAs (including declaration of new MPAs) • Licensing and registration of fishing boats • Working with Alliance • Campaigns to get community buzz • New MOU to be signed

  12. Conclusions • We can have a chat in the coming weeks and at module 4 • Take the next few weeks to think through what your vision is for your site / your LAP • We can work with you to develop a road map to make it happen

  16. Tools you can use to communicate to Rare your vision in the closing 3 months • Finalized MPA network plan – lay out road map • Campaign plan report and analysis with directions for moving forward • New MOU to be formulated per LAP (Alumni Ambassador in particular, but other cases if needed)

  17. Phils 2 – Likely Sites • Long way to go • Just received their announcements that if they reach certain criteria they will be able to join the cohort • Final decision will be made by June • Likely 15 Conservation Fellows in Philippines 2, with kick off event in June

Key Features of Phils 2 that build on Phils 1 • All events will be conducted in Philippines (no exceptions) – training venue - Bohol • Focus on Climate Resilient MPA networks (larger MPAs – have to be declared before we begin) • Focus on TURF Fisheries and municipal waters • Possibly looking at role of alliances for scaling up and replication • Geographical clusters and synergies
