  1. The Fate of the American Turtle…rests in your hands. To begin this webquest, click the submarine.

Your mission… The Turtle is operational, but no one seems to be able to make it battle-worthy… It’s up to you to find the problem, fix it, and present your improved model to General Washington at the Military Conference at the end of the month. If you accept this mission, click the Union Flag to receive your instructions

  3. First Steps… You must first familiarize yourself with the history of this machine.Read the Epilogue and Author’s Note in Attack of the Turtle. Task #1: Sort the literary elements of the book based on true history: • Characters: (main and major) • Settings: (main and major) • Plot Events (major) Create a chart or graph to present your findings. When finished, click the book cover.

  4. Getting to know the Sub Now that you know the truth, you must get to know the inner workings of the submarine. Click on the links to get inside the inventor’s head and learn how the Turtle was supposed to work. • About the Inventor of the Turtle • How everything worked • Wikipedia page • All About- includes real letters! .   5. Next Steps… Task #2 Create a drawing or model of the Turtle the way David Bushnell designed it. Include an explanation in your own words of how the working parts were supposed to function. When finished, Click the pencil

Task #3 Now, try to fix up this sub, so it’s not only sea-worthy, but battle-worthy! • Create a drawing or model of your new design. • Include an explanation of how the working parts are going to function. • Include your reasoning to present to Washington- How and Why will this work better than David’s? • CHALLENGE: Do it with materials, tools, etc. ONLY that existed during the 1700’s!(That’s before electricity) • Good pics and diagrams with description • Recreation of the Turtle • For a full list of helpful links, click on David Bushnell 
