  3. IUSD LITERACY VISION To improve the reading and writing performance of ALL K-3 students by promoting teaching practices and instructional decision-making that support every primary student in becoming an engaged, proficient, strategic reader and writer.

Overview of Primary Literacy Project • Module 1: Classroom Management & Organization, Balanced Literacy Program, Meaningful Work • Module 2: Small Group Differentiated Reading Instruction • Module 3: Comprehension • Module 4: Vocabulary and Background Knowledge • Module 5:Challenging Your Students: Rigor and Gradual Release of Responsibility  • Module 6: 6+1 Traits Writing

  5. Course Requirements • Class Size Reduction Training • Design: Six Modules with follow up action plan and homework assignment • 3 Coaching Sessions • Attendance – Plan around the dates! • Make-up Assignments • Incentive Options: Credit/Stipend

Module One Outcomes • Identify ways to increase student engagement. • Understand the importance of meaningful work. • Understand the link between assessment and flexible grouping • Explore the management of Universal Access or RTI Time • Understand and implement effective classroom procedures to support learning. • Develop and implement a Personal Action Plan

  10. BUILDING COMMUNITYIN YOUR CLASSROOM…Because the emotional and social learning systems are foundational to learning

  11. Teacher Role • Greet students • Be enthusiastic and SMILE! • Model active listening • Know your students • Be interactive and visible • Facilitate classroom meetings • Invite student input • Use humor • Celebrate student achievement • Celebrate mistakes as opportunities for learning

  13. Why? • The teacher has not thought out what happens in the classroom. • The students have not practiced the procedure. • The teacher spends no time managing or facilitating the classroom; instead they discipline students….taking away from small group time.

  14. How to Teach Procedures 3 Step Model • Teach:explain, state, model and demonstrate the procedure. • Practice:rehearse and practice under the teacher’s guidance. • Apply:reinforce the procedure through practice until it becomes a student habit or routine.

  15. Reevaluate procedures and modify throughout the year as needed.

  16. The Result • The procedures that set the class up for success will ensure a positive year. • Teaching and learning in all content areas will be more successful if procedures and routines are set up early. Take the necessary time at the beginning of the year – it is not a waste of time.
