Splitting the Smartie An Edible Science Experiment
Introduction • Area of Science: Chemistry • Grade Range: K-3 • Age Range: 5-7 • Adult Supervision: Not needed
Purpose • To see ink split into different colors
Supplies • Filter paper or blotting paper cut into circles with 15cm diameter • Roll of Smarties • Small cup of water • Paper plate
Safety Keep the experiment on the plate until it dries or you might stain the table or your hands!
Procedures • Place the plate on a flat surface • Place the paper circle on the plate • Place a Smartie on the center of the paper circle • Dip your finger in the water • Slowly drip drops of water onto the Smartie until it is very wet and there is a circle of water around the Smartie about 5cm across • Wait
Conclusion • You should see rings of color spreading out on the paper from the Smartie • Now you can eat your candy!!
Explanation • Capillary Action-Water flowing through the fibers of the paper • Hydrophilic-Water loving; will dissolve in water • Hydrophobic-Water hating; will not dissolve in water
Altenative Materials • Use an M&M instead of the Smartie • Use a felt tip marker to make an ink dot on the paper instead of the Smartie
