We all started out here, didn’t we? • When we younger, we started out combining words and images…until we “grow out of it” (139).
McCloud notes that “Pictures and words once together in the center of the iconic abstraction chart [that we looked at in a pervious chapter], have at this point drifted to opposite corners” (145).
This collision helped eventually give rise to higher forms of art that for many audiences was not something that they found appealing. For McCloud points out that “perceptions of ‘great’ art and ‘great’ writing hasn’t changed much in 150 years. Any artist wishing to do great work in a medium using words and pictures will have to contend with this attitude…in others and in themselves...” (150).
