Young Enterprise and Employment (YEU)Research Presentation By Shenika Dillon
Introduction My research presentation is about the The YEU project . The project hasn't yet started but it is designed to help young people gain the training and support that is necessary to be an entrepreneur. BOA is also a partner in this project and i felt that as it is new i could learn at the same time everyone else in the project is also , it is more likely to need a promotional video due to its target audience.
Scratching the surface When recession hit so did youth unemployment and unlike the recession we are almost out of youth un-employment is still at its highest in the uk , statistics show the rise as the recession hit . The Yeu project will provide entrepreneurial training to young people living in areas with a high rate of unemployment , which will enable them to start there own business as an alternative to not being in education or employment (NEET) The project comes from previous projects like “YENTELS” “YOUNG CHAMBER” “YPCOE”.The YENTELS approach will be incorporated into YEU with practical experiences and training materials gained from numerous other entrepreneurial projects targeted at young people .for example : • CWCC’s recently completed YPCOE project & Young Chamber initiative • A range of Leonardo & Erasmus projects focussed on young entrepreneurs involving the University of Lublin • Democentre’s Innovate Business Start-up project in Emilia Romagna
Not to Get confused Yentels was a previous project funded by the innovative Leonardo from 2007 – 2009 Yentels main purpose was to offer young people throughout Europe educational programs that stimulate innovative ideas and drive and prepare them for starting their own companies. They did this by developing the e learning suite which allowed young people to explore the business sector and real life situations gaining entrepreneurial skills through playing a game. The skills they gained would be useful when starting up there own business . The projects main focus were young people who had chose not to go into higher education and were more suited to going down the more vocational route After the Yentels project ended they noticed a lot of people and businesses had taken a liking to the way Yentels ran in terms of the games and course available. It has lead to requests from national programmes asking for materials to be translated and contextualised into a wider range of languages and regions and also to meet the needs of young people in formal education and those working for SMEs .

YEU Project • To narrow it down the YEU project a transfer from the previous project “YENTELS ” that is being exported from the UK and Bulgaria to a wider audience being Slovenia, Turkey, Italy, Portugal & Poland. Where as “YEU” want to have more of an impact on the UK & Bulgaria as Yentels wasn't so much a generalised on EU countries but didn't’t really focus on the UK and Bulgaria which is what YEU aims to do . YEU is slightly different as it will contain elements of the business sector aimed at young people who are interest in starting a business in (. new media / ICT and trades based industries) also including young people in formal education / working for SMEs. The project will have a lot of involvement from young peoples organisations and contains technical features such as (social media, m-learning, video streaming)which meets the target audiences interests • Theaims of the project are to 1. to help promote creativity, competitiveness, employability and the growth of an entrepreneurial spirit 2. to contribute to increased participation in lifelong learning by people of all ages 3. to support the development of innovative ICT-based content, services, pedagogies and practice for lifelong learning; The aims will be achieved by ensuring that the “ YENTELS” entrepreneurship material and the business games are updated and fit the target audiences needs . But also promoting collaborations between the partners involved and youth groups encouraging them to include entrepreneurship in there programmes and use the YEU online materials
Target Audience • The projects primary target audience are people who are not in education or employment or training (NEET) • Young people suffering from the recent economic down turn. • All young people not just those that wish to be entrepreneurs . As they will gain Business and entrepreneurial skills • The secondary target audience are people that are in formal education or are likely to start up a business in either ICT , media and trades sector and young people already working for SME
Primary Research I created an online questionnaire to see if the “YEU” project would benefit young people and would it interest them . YEU works both ways young people gain experience and skills need to run there own business while the project create the next generation of business men / women One of the most interesting questions i asked was what do you think you need to start your own business and the recurring answer was MONEY The “Yeu project is free and gives the experience and skills need to be an entrepreneur and could also be funded by the project partners
From the questionnaire it is clear to see that the project would in fact attract young people and at the moment they don’t feel that they are receiving enough support to be an entrepreneur but they are interested in being part of a scheme to make that possible . Also the questionnaire shows that young people access information via social media which is what “YEU” is all about
Also from general conversations with peers about which direction we take after college weather it’s higher education or employment .For a lot of us it is on to higher education While others either want to work for a company or be self employed . For the ones not going to university the “ YEU “ could be beneficial in terms of experience skill and possibly funding On the 10th and 11th December i plan to conduct a few interviews at the “YEU” conference with a couple of the partners and hopefully get in touch with young people who were apart of the Yentels project and see if they have any success stories.
What I noticed Even though the project is talking about entrepreneurship on a whole it has an agenda. The basic gamin aspect of e learning is targeted at any potential entrepreneur “YEU “ is kind of swayed towards encouraging young people to set up businesses in the ICT / new media and trades based sectors . And a lot of the response i got from the questionnaire when i asked the question “What kind of business would you like to start up “ NONE of them where technical based that could be because more women answer than men but even the male answers were still not technical based . I also noticed that when i asked “ have you ever heard of the chamber of commerce 100% of people answered no , which proves that a promotional video would help to get the chamber of commerce on a whole and its youth projects a bit more acknowledgement as again from the questionnaire 92.3 % of people felt they don’t receive enough support. When actually there are programs / projects that would support them (yentels / Yeu)
