  1. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop Brussels, November 12, 2008 • Chair : • Mrs. Anne Laperrouze • Dr. Wolf Klinz • Mr. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis • Mr. Sarunas Birutis • Speaker : Dr. Wolfram Westmeier W. Westmeier

  2. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 • It is unquestionably true that at tolerable risks • - ecological • environmental • financial • health • safety & security • only nuclear power can support mankind in the future. • But :Nuclear waste problem must be solved W. Westmeier

  3. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 Favourite : dual strata concept Source: M. Touron, CEA, France Four major technological units : Generation IV reactor (FBR)* Element separation (Reprocessing, Partitioning) Transmutation (ADS) Accelerator * NO proliferation W. Westmeier

  4. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 • Key properties : • Generation IV reactor ≡ no proliferation • Generation IV reactor • + ≡ no long-lived waste • Transmutation • - With modern technology ≡ no safety risk W. Westmeier

  5. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 • Let us focus on Transmutation • Effective and economical systems will have: • Particle Energy 0.5 GeV ≤ Ep ≤ 3 GeV • Particle beam 5 mA ≤ Ip ≤ 50 mA • Heavy element spallation/fission target • Maybe moderated neutrons • There are many variables • There is a lot of energy (heat) • There is a lot of radioactivity • There is not much time W. Westmeier

  6. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 The development task is huge Most details must be model-calculated on the basis of correct integral reference (=benchmark) data These data are missing Our Collaboration measures them W. Westmeier

  7. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier

  8. 4.15GeV 2.0GeV 1.0GeV 0.53GeV ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier

  9. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 • The usable volume is small • Big targets are not useful • The energy density is very high W. Westmeier

  10. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier

  11. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 • There are many more open questions that require experimental verification such as • Use of Pu/Am/Cm as spallation target • Ceramic targets • He production in targets • Moderator optimisation • Other projectiles than protons • etc……. The Fundraising Initiative tries to support our Collaboration for these experiments W. Westmeier

  12. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 EU supports Transmutation in FP4, FP5, FP6 and FP7 BUT self-organisation of supported tasks does not consider measurement of integral nuclear data Thus, money is needed from elsewhere A safe solution of the nuclear waste problem is possible W. Westmeier

  13. ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 Thank you W. Westmeier
