Green ROUTES: Redirecting Our campUs Toward Environmental Sustainability ENV 302 Spring 2009 & BUS 321 Fall 2008
Green ROUTES gathered information that has an impact on carbon emissions. • This required the team to reach out to various departments within CSC as well as various town services.
Lessons Learned: • Colby-Sawyer needs improvement in data records • Valuable communication skills necessary for data collection • How we impact the environment
Results • All sources considered, Colby-Sawyer College emits 7,637 metric tons of CO₂ per year, the equivalent of 212 dump trucks full of coal! CO2
How Do We Compare to Others? • We researched other colleges that have signed the commitment • Our criteria was that the size could not be over 7,000 full time students
Gaining perspectives Green Mountain College Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests
Proctor Academy • This is an institution that strives for carbon neutrality • Major recycling effort • All food waste is composted • Ban on bottled water • Building energy efficient buildings
Green Mountain College • “Cow Power” fuels electrical demands • Their electric demand is 2% of total emissions • Ours is 44% of our total emissions • Student voice • Greening Fund helps to drive student initiatives • Windmill • Recycling Bins • Duplex Printing
Franklin Pierce • Altered mission statement in 1998 to include environmental awareness • Changed appliances, expanded outdoor programs • Challenges
Poster Campaign • Displayed in the dining hall • 101 series provides students with facts to help them become more environmentally aware • 201 series begins this semester
Lights Out Event Lights ON Lights OFF McKean Hall President’s House
Battle of the Sexes • Males and Females battled for a week to see who could waste less food • Measured per student per week • Females wasted 2.7 ounces • Males wasted 3.7 ounces • Males wasted 30% more than Females
Five Focus Areas • Biodiversity & Water • Food • Consumption & Waste • Investment, Curriculum & Culture • Energy
WATER Fig. 2
BIODIVERSITY Some of the invasive Species at Colby-Sawyer College: Japanese Barberry Oriental Bittersweet Norway Maple Multiflora Rose Burning Bush
Food • Sustainable food practices by other Colleges • Middlebury: buy local organic food and produce their own food • Brown: harvest program to help farmers • University of Vermont: reusable mugs for all students
Food • Sodexho provides our distributors • Kettle Kup Bakery • North Main Distributors • Coco Cola • Black River Produce • Changes: • Reusable mugs for all students • More Local and organic food in the dining hall • This Spring • Campus farm • Food Map
Last year CSC spent $16,573.23 on paper Average paper use amounted to 3,000 sheets per student Currently, CSC does not purchase any recycled paper Waste & Consumption
Waste & Consumption Initiative: • Increase recycling bins on campus • Incorporate duplex printing to reduce paper consumption • Begin purchasing 100% post consumer paper • Purchase containers to recycle compact batteries and electronics
Culture • We requested a campus-wide Light’s Out Event from the SGA, which was hosted November 6, 2008, with SGA members. • Challenges • Annual Light’s Out Event (November 6, 2008) • Sustainability Day • Green fund for CSC • Sustainability Pledge(s)
Curriculum • We researched CSC’s curriculum to find ways to incorporate sustainable themes in classrooms and on campus • Developing two plans for sustainable themes • Optional sustainability focused pathway readings and films • Implement green curriculum ideas in freshmen pathways • Both plans will be further researched and developed to be implementable within the college curriculum
Investment We continued the analysis of green funds vs. current CSC funds for 2006 - 2008. It was difficult to make accurate comparisons of data Challenging because CSC portfolio changes over time, finding data for funds CSC is not practicing green investing CSC needs to continue researching green investing
Energy • 45% total emissions attributed to electrical demands alone Scope 1: Direct Transportation, Other on-campus stationary Scope 2: Purchased Electricity Scope 3: Various Commuting, Wastewater
Energy • “No Incandescent bulbs” Policy Savings = $10,468 (1,520 student bulbs burning 6 hours per day for 244 days)
Focusing on Energy • Explore ways to develop a greater culture of energy conservation • Gain a better understanding of different energy resources • Nuclear • Biomass • Wind • Solar
Summary • Completed the ACUPCC report • Compared with other colleges • Raised awareness on campus • Gathered data and conducted research essential for final recommendations
Future Goals • Complete a comprehensive sustainability analysis • Develop a data management plan for future ACUPCC reports • Raise more awareness on campus • Recommend policies to make this a greener campus
