GOALS • Familiarize freshman and transfer students with: • Customer oriented services and operations of the Miller F. Whittaker (MFW) Library. • MFW Library Web site. • Resources for finding books, e-books, and journal articles. • Strategies for completingtheLibrary’s component ofUniversity 101.
OVERVIEW: Miller F. Whittaker Library • Built in 1968 • Named after Dr. Miller F. Whittaker, the University’s third president, architect, and engineer. • Is centrally located on campus. • Holds over 1.4 million books, periodicals, and other resources. • Dr. Ruth Hodges is the Interim Dean of the Library.
HOURS OF OPERATION *Computers on 15 min. after opening and shutdown 15 min prior to closing
WRITING AND RESEARCH • Get clear understandingof writing or research requirements. • Select a topic. • Focus topic. a. Read books and journal articles on topic until clear focus is obtained.
SEARCH STRATEGIES Break topic into keywords. Think about related words. Use connectors to combine keywords.
SEARCH STRATEGIES: CONNECTORS Connectors (Combine Keywords) • Examples of Connectors • AND – retrieves documents containing all keywords. • OR – retrieves documents containing any of the keywords but not necessarily all of them together. • NOT – retrieves documents excluding one or more keywords.
