HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • Production cross sections • Single strange hypernuclei (with one L or S) production cross sections are 100 to 250 nbarn/sr at 1 to 2 GeV/c proton beams on nuclear targets • Doubly strange hypernuclei (with two L) are 10 to 50 nbarn/sr at 0.5 GeV/c Kaon or Hyperon beams on nuclear targets • Doubly strange hypernuclei (with a X) are unknown but 7 candidate events exist.
HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • Production cross-sections of single strange Hypernuclei on Hydrogen, Helium and Carbon targets are well known. V.N. Fetisov Nuc. Phys A639 (1998) p 177. • The MIPP upgrade experiment with its high data rates should be able to get some very large samples
HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • Doubly strange hypernuclei with two L particles present has only a few well known production cross sections: as a function of energy transferred to the nucleus
p + Ntarget → Xstrange + H Where H is the hyper nuclei, it can be identified in the TPC or by missing mass Xstrange is a single strange particle without any accompanying strange particle Ntarget need to be pure isotope targets HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • Tagging of the production of HyperNuclei is crucial to a clean sample. • By knowing that we have a ultra pure beam of tagged particles, protons, or Kaons on nuclear targets we can do what other experiments have lacked.
HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • Doubly strange hypernuclei are best tagged with the Ds=2 process of K- beam on nuclear targets producing K+ out and no other strange particle. • Backgrounds can then be studied by using K+ beams producing a single K- particle out.
H.C. Bhang et al. Nuc. Phys A639 (1998) p 269 and 270 HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • What is exciting about hypernuclei physics: • Life times of L increase when bound in the hypernuclei. This is similar to the free neutron which is unstable but a bound neutron is not.
HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • What is exciting about hypernuclei physics: • Binding potentials in single and doubly strange hypernuclei are able to explore the nuclear potential functions. H.C. Bhang et al. Nuc. Phys A639 (1998) p 269 and 270
HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • What is exciting about hypernuclei physics: • Mass of the new hypernuclei system is complicated depending where the hyperon is trapped in the spin states. S. Ajimura et al. Nucl. Phys A639 (1998) p 93-99
HyperNuclei in the MIPP upgrade • Conclusion: • The MIPP upgrade has an ultra pure tagged beam of pions, protons and Kaons on nuclear targets • The MIPP upgrade momentum resolution is spectacular for this type of physics • The MIPP upgrade improved data rate will allow the largest sample of collected tagged events possible
