  2. What is an Epic Poem? • An epic poem is a long narrative about the adventures of a larger than life character

  3. Characteristics of an epic poem • Hero is a great leader. • The setting is broad and includes supernatural realms. • The hero does great deeds in battle or undertakes an extraordinary journey or quest. • The hero is a figure of great national or even cosmic importance-usually the ideal man of his culture.

  4. Epic Characteristics • The action consists of deeds of valor or superhuman courage (especially in battle). • It opens in the middle of things. • The setting is vast and it covers many nations, the under world and the universe.
