National History Day At Brunswick Middle School
Project Objectives • To interpret artifacts and primary sources • To organize events into historical sequence • To analyze events from more than one perspective • To construct and present a representation of data
What is National History Day? • Think “Science Fair” for History. It’s much more than that. Let’s explore together: http://www.nhd.org • The competition happens at four levels: school, district, state, and national. • Students create projects around a yearly theme. They choose their own topics. They then create exhibits, websites, documentaries, performances, or research papers.
Creating an Entry • To learn more about the project options and building an entry for this contest, explore here: http://nhd.org/CreatingEntry.htm • You are free to choose any project option you would like and you may choose to work in groups– up to four people. • You may work with students in my other classes as well (who are participating in NHD).
2014 NHD Theme • This year’s theme is: Rights and Responsibilities in History. • Your projects must be build around this theme as this will be portion of your score and grade. • All project topics must be approved by me (Mr. Strait) before you begin extensive research on your topic. • To learn more about this year’s theme, go here: http://www.mdhc.org/files/resources/2014_nhd_themesheet_fnl.PDF
Topic Ideas for 2014 • Here you can find topic ideas as a way to get started: http://www.mdhc.org/files/resources/2014_sample_topics.pdf • You may also choose a topic of your own based on your personal historical interests. • Ideally, you can use a historical topic that surfaced during your Family History Project for National History Day.
More on Topics • Students tend to have greater success with content judging and with finding relevant research by choosing local topics. • Here is a list of Maryland-based topics provided by the Maryland Historical Society: http://www.mdhc.org/files/resources/md-history-day-topics_2013-2014.pdf • For Frederick County topics, you may want to contact or visit the Frederick County Historical Society: http://www.hsfcinfo.org/
Maryland Historical Society • The Maryland Historical Society is a great resource for student participants in National History Day. The state contest is referred to as “Maryland History Day”. • Maryland History Day Central: http://www.mdhc.org/programs/maryland-history-day/contest/

Project Steps • This project will be completed in steps with each step being a graded part of the process. • Here are the steps: • Choose a Topic and Project Option • Decide: Individual or Group? • Learn: Primary and Secondary Sources • Researching Your Topic • Formulating Your Project • Draft and Edit • Final Project Presentation
What’s Due Now: • Choosing Your Topic– By Thursday, December 5th, all students must choose a topic and decide if they are working as individuals or if they are working in a group (up to four). • For help, please see the Topic Ideas for 2014 slide and the More on Topics slide.
