  4. Qualifications, cont. • Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (2002-2004). Principal Investigator. Understanding High Risks Factors for Multiple Hospitalizations: Consumer Voice andPerceptions. This multi-site qualitative research project focused on multiple hospitalizations of individuals with severe mental illness, in response to the Olmstead decision. Components of this project also focused on family members, and cultural differences of the Latino culture on the phenomena of repeated hospitalizations.

Description of Updated Curriculum The Visions for Tomorrow rewrite project will: Accommodate the Texas Department of State Health Services guidelines Be grounded in the most current research and best practices Be presented in three major sections Be presented in an organized, easy to understand format with interactive components

Description of Updated Curriculum Include all themes of the current curriculum Address the major areas of interest in the field of mental illness Provide basic information about the nature of mental illness followed by a comprehensive description of major illnesses. Each illness will be introduced with a vignette or case study followed by

  8. answers to nine questions: • 1. What is this disorder? • 2. What causes this disorder? • 3. How do you feel if you have this disorder? • 4. What are the most common symptoms of this disorder? • 5. What are the different types of this disorder? • 6. What is the course and prognosis of this disorder? • 7. How common is this disorder? • 8. What are the most common treatments for this this disorder? • 9. What can families and friends do to help?

  9. Description of Updated Curriculum The following are some of the topics that have been added: • Expanding to age 22 (IDEA and Special Education services continue through 22) • Teenage Driving • Adoption of children with mental illnesses. • Psychiatric Rehabilitation

  10. Benefits of the Curriculum The new Visions for Tomorrow Curriculum is intended to be used by caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness as a teaching tool and as a reference aid.

  11. Benefits of the Curriculum As a teaching tool, caregivers can use the curriculum as a comprehensive educational course in mental illness, or use some of the sections independently to meet the needs of a particular audience.

  12. Benefits of the Curriculum In addition, this curriculum can be utilized by caregivers as a reference aid to answer general questions when a professional is not available.

  14. Tentative Curriculum Outline II. Mental Illnesses A. Disorders Usually First diagnosed in Infancy, childhood, or Adolescence B. Adult Disorders That May Begin in Childhood or Adolescence
