  1. Globalization SSWH21 – The student will analyze globalization in the contemporary world.

  2. After the Cold War… • As the Soviet Union crumbles, ideals of democracy (natural rights, capitalism, free/fair elections) spread • Examples: • Fall of the Berlin Wall • Reunification of Germany in 1990 (East+West) • Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 • Anti-apartheid movement

  3. Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 • June 1989, 1000s of protesters gather in Tiananmen Spare in Beijing, China • Protesters want democracy in China • Chinese military moves in and kill1000s of protesters, ending the demonstrations

  4. Anti-Apartheid Movement • Apartheid – policy of rigid segregation of non-white people in South Africa • Nelson Mandela and others convince people from around world to join Anti-Apartheid Movement • Apartheid ends in 1990

  5. The world becomes interconnected… Globalization – process where different countries economies, politics, cultures, and societies become with those of other nations around the world As communications technology improved, computers, satellites, TV, etc. increased globalization

  6. Globalization’s effects… • As countries form more and more political and economic ties, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) formed: • United Nations (UN) • Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) • World Trade Organization (WTO)

  7. Environmental Concerns… • Manmade problems due to industrialization and globalization: • Deforestation • Global warming • Acid rain • All illustrate the negative impact of human actions on the environment

  8. What to do about the environment? Kyoto Protocol issued by the UN to get international community to cooperate to fix environmental issues
