Location Scouting The how tos
11/3/09Aim: How to we use location scouting to prepare for shooting? • Do Now: What do you believe the importance of a location scout to be?
The Look (General Scout) • Focus on: • Look at physical space • Architecture • Background • Light • Colors • Lines • What does the look add to the film aesthetically? • Appropriate for the action? • Add to the overall emotional tone? • Most of your tech survey will relate to this section
Access • Can you get access to the location on the day/hours you need it? • For us, this will be more about other students being there etc
Logistics • Is the location safe? • Adequate light? • Enough space for crew, equipment and cast?
Sound • Are you using sound? • What is the ambient sound like? • Will the ambient sound affect your ability to have quality dialogue?
Securing the location • Permits and agreements—don’t worry about this quite yet…
Art Direction • What does the setting look like in its unaltered state? • What is on the walls? • What are the furnishings? • What is in the background? • What needs to change to make the space look the way you want it to look?
By the end of today: • Full location scout finished, including photos taken of each set-up. • List of needed props and other materials and who will be responsible to bring them in • Breakdown sheets for each scene
