Children & Youth Two-fold Increase in calls to the Crisis Response Team in Victoria
Children & Youth Three-fold increase in encounters at Victoria General Hospital
Steps taken ... • Developed a Strategic Plan • Introduced new services at Victoria General Hospital - Improved timely access to crisis mental health services • Initiated safety upgrade at Jack Ledger Child/Youth Facility - Plans to expand the special care unit (Fall 2014) • Improving links to Community Services - Future area of focus
What does Progress look like? • Faster access to specialized mental health services • From 48 hrs+ to 24 hrs or less • Child/Youth counselor on the Pediatric Unit • Fewer Admissions • 50% reduction in admissions through Emergency Dept • Stronger care plans for youth during their inpatient stay

Hard to Reach in Greater Victoria • Non cannabis drug offences are 26% higher in Victoria than the island (241 vs. 192 per 100,000) • Illicit drug deaths are 67% higher than BC average (10.4 vs. 6.2 per 100,000) • One of the top 3 regions on the island for drug induced deaths
