  4. 3. The Vision of a Macedonian (16:6-10) • Gal 4:13-14 Paul say it was an infirmity that forced him to go to Galatia • Acts 16:7 – Luke might be referring to an infirmity when saying that the Holy Spirit would not allow the missionaries to speak in either Asia or Bithynia.

The Beginning of the Mission in Europe and Lydia Acts 16:11-15 • Paul avoids receiving money or material goods from his disciples or converts (Acts 20:33-35) • Lydia “prevailed upon us” to accept her hospitality • Paul would not forget this gesture • Paul refers to the Philippians' generosity later Read Phil 4:15-16

Matthew 27:51b-54 • Also a supernatural event in Acts 4:31 when spirit descends on them

Missionaries are Absolved and Expelled (16:35-40) • With dramatic flair the reader suddenly learns that both Paul and Silas are Roman citizens protected by law against scourging • Acts 22:25-29 same situation • contrast 2 Cor 11:23-25 where he lists how he has been persecuted • Paul’s account 1 Thess 2:2 - “but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi” • Phil 1:3-5 sound more optimistic

Thessalonica (17:1-9) • Acts 17:5 compare with Acts 13:45 - such jealousy seems to refer to the great number of converts overwhelming the Jewish population in the synagogue: “But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy; and blaspheming, they contradicted what was spoken by Paul.” Compare 1 Thess 2:1-2

Athens (17:15-34) Waiting in Athens (vv. 15-16) • 1 Thess 3:1-2 Appealing to the Athenians (vv. 24-31) • Paul describes the work of God, partly based on Isaiah 42:5 • God as creator is an idea common to Jews and Greeks, see Acts 14:15 Dionysius the Areopagite and Damaris (vv. 32-34) • juxtaposing genders: • Luke 15:3-10 lost coin • Acts 5:1-11 Ananias and Sapphira.
