Effective questioning is there to: • to stimulate thinking • assess student progress • check on teacher clarity • motivate students to pay attention • maintain classroom control • provide repetition • emphasize key points By C Thompson
Questioning Skills- presenting questions • For this the teacher needs to: • Recognise what they want students to discover from the question asked • State the question to everyone and not someone in particular • After the question has been asked in general then and only then specifying someone By C Thompson
Questioning Skills- probing questions • If a student doesn’t know the full answer ‘tease-out’- probe until you uncover what they do know – this is rewarding for everyone • It also allows for the question to be broken down by the students – this is effective analysis • Probing necessitates patience on the part of the teacher and student. But it facilitates thinking and analysis By C Thompson
Questioning Skills- shifting interaction • Shifting interaction is where after the initial question has been asked the teacher allows the students to interact between each other • So if after probing a student knowledge runs dry, reward the student then encourage another student to answer the question • Such a process might facilitate students coming back to the teacher with a question! By C Thompson
Conclusions • Questioning is a means of getting feedback to evaluate student progress • It increases student learning • It is a way to force students to think during class • It increases the opportunity for whole class interaction • By Teaching by Asking Instead of by Telling By C Thompson
