Fetal Pig Dissection Things to consider...
Planning for dissection • The following slides are intended to guide you in preparing for a two day fetal pig dissection • You are expected to record your answers/responses independently on a piece of paper
Forming a group... • 3 people per group BUT • Must fill the following roles: • Main surgeon • Surgical assistant • Recorder
Know the following terms: • Medial • Lateral • Distal • Proximal • Dorsal • Ventral
The external features of your pig: • Consider this: • pig gestation takes 112 – 115 days • The length of your pig can tell you its age • 11mm = 21 days • 2.8cm = 49 days • 22cm = 100 days • 30cm = pre-birth
The external features of your pig: • What is the gender of your pig? • How can you tell? • Consider examining external features before making any cuts • Toes, feet, tail, skin, eyes, ears, nose, etc. • Consider beginning by looking inside the mouth where you know the digestive tract begins • Try to identify features and guess their function • Maybe draw a diagram to record and remember what you saw
Making incisions... • How will you keep the legs out of the way while you cut? • Which direction should you cut? • What measures will you take to ensure you don’t damage or lacerate internal structures as you make incisions?
Keeping track of your dissection... • How will you mark or identify structures as you go? • Consider which structures you expect to see and how many diagrams you will make.
Most importantly! • How will you summarize what you’ve learned? • What will your end product look like... • ...on paper? • ...with drawings? • ...with descriptions? • How will you carry what you learn from the dissection into the Mammalian Anatomy unit?
What to bring tomorrow: • Clothing that you’ll be fine with getting dirty • A solid plan of action with your partners • Curiosity and a responsible attitude
