When Started with the Civil War in Iraq – “Kurdish Civil War” in 1994 U.S. bombed air defense sites in southern Iraq on September 3, 1996 – mission was dubbed “Operation Desert Strike”. The operation was over Sept. 5 War ended November 25, 1997 – with an ‘unofficial’ order of cease fire.

Why U.S. was contracted to help defend Kurdish Factions, also known as the United Nations “safe haven”, from Hussein’s attacks. The reason we had to defend them was because of Saddam Hussein’s brutal attacks on the Kurds.
Result Around a month later, Bill Clinton signed the Iraq Liberation Act law, providing for military assistance to Iraqi opposition groups, including the PUK (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) and KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party)
