The En Dash • Not as long as the Em dash, but longer than a hyphen • Literally means “through” • Used for ranges • Stock prices were off 2%–4% for the quarter. • Inclusive dates or numbers • Read pages 101–123
Hyphenating words that already have a hyphen • English–Scotch-Irish descent *The Hyphen can be used in place of the En dash, but rigid grammar gurus would probably advise against this. *Probably best to avoid using dashes whenever possible or you’ll end up with writing like mine. *when in doubt, look it up in your writing manual!

What happens when you confuse the dash and the hyphen… You end up with crazy sentences like this: That gull—dern, mother—grabbing tremor-must have been the size of a bus-almost ate me!
