The Em Dash • This is the dash we normally think of when we think DASH • The longest dash • Used to create a strong break in a sentence • I stole the bananas—they were over-ripe—because I thought they’d just get trashed. • Separate a phrase using a series of commas • I wish all happy things—stars, unicorns, and fuzzy-wuzzies—could make life easier for everyone.

  3. Attribute an author after a direct quote • “By trying we can easily learn to endure adversity—another man's I mean.” —Mark Twain • Indicate an unfinished thought • “What the gull-dern—” she started.

  4. The En Dash • Not as long as the Em dash, but longer than a hyphen • Literally means “through” • Used for ranges • Stock prices were off 2%–4% for the quarter. • Inclusive dates or numbers • Read pages 101–123

  5. Hyphenating words that already have a hyphen • English–Scotch-Irish descent *The Hyphen can be used in place of the En dash, but rigid grammar gurus would probably advise against this. *Probably best to avoid using dashes whenever possible or you’ll end up with writing like mine. *when in doubt, look it up in your writing manual!

The Hyphen • Not really a dash, but very dash-like in appearance • Commonly used in place of a en dash • Sometimes considered the most arduous punctuation mark because of all the rules surrounding the use of it • Used in compound words • Best to use the dictionary to double-check • Separation of letters • L-O-V-E • To divide words at the end of a line • Many more and then some

  7. What happens when you confuse the dash and the hyphen… You end up with crazy sentences like this: That gull—dern, mother—grabbing tremor-must have been the size of a bus-almost ate me!
