After School Programs 2002-03 Children’s Services Council asked the Literacy Coalition to create a reading program for afterschool settings After School Reads was selected as the program name
KidzLit was chosen as the curriculum as it was research based and correlated to the Florida Sunshine State Standards for Reading Initially the program served 7 sites
In 2004, After School Reads became an enhancement under Prime Time Palm Beach County Since then more than 60 afterschool programs have participated in After School Reads
The core model includes: training afterschool practitioners in reading strategies modeling effective techniques conducting observations retraining as needed creating classroom libraries
Evenings are based on the Florida Partnership for Family Involvement in Education model around a common theme and book Snacks, materials, books, art activities and prizes are given to families attending Now annually, 15 Family Reading Nights
Since 2010, KidzMath and KidzScience have been added to KidzLit in the After School Reads Program All 3 programs follow the Common Core Standards
In 2011-12 After School Reads served 2,500 children through Family Reading Nights and the training, observations and modeling given to 300 practitioners at 25 sites More than 17,000 books were distributed to local afterschool programs
In 2011, Prime Time asked the Literacy Coalition to train staff on how to teach anti-bullying strategies to children using children’s literature Turning Bullies into Buddies was developed and now serves 16 sites with a dynamic literature based curriculum
In 2012, After School Reads and Turning Bullies into Buddies transitioned from being enhancements to being Expanded Learning Opportunities
