The News of the world final call • The News of the World was a national newspaper published in the United Kingdom from 1843 to 2011 (spanning 168 years). It was at one time the biggest selling English language newspaper in the world, and at closure still had one of the highest English language circulations. • The newspaper concentrated on celebrity-based scoops and populist news. Its fondness for sex scandals gained it the nicknames News of the Screws and Screws of the World. It had a reputation for exposing national or local celebrities as drug users, sex freaks or criminals, setting up insiders and journalists in disguise to provide either video or photographic evidence, and phone hacking in ongoing police investigations. Sales averaged 2,812,005 copies per week in October 2010. • From 2006, allegations of phone hacking began to engulf the newspaper. These culminated in the revelation on 4 July 2011 that, nearly a decade earlier, a private investigator hired by the newspaper had intercepted and deleted the voicemail of missing British teenager Milly Dowler, who was later found murdered. Amid a public backlash and the withdrawal of advertising, News International announced the closure of the newspaper on 7 July 2011. • The scandal deepened when the paper was alleged to have hacked into the phones of families of British service personnel killed in action.

Jose Mourinho Pinches Eye of Barcelona Coach After Real Madrid Loss Jose Mourinho pinching the eye of Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova after the 2011 Spanish Supercup played on the 17th August. Any Barcelona vs Real Madrid match is tension-filled. Regarded are two of the best football clubs on the planet, the two Spanish sides have been bitterly fighting for supremacy for years. And this 2011 Spanish Supercup meeting was equally tension-filled as Barcelona attempted to win it for the third straight time and Real Madrid trying desperately to stop it. What probably makes matters worse for Real is its seeming frustration in stopping Barcelona over the last few years, Lionel Messi in particular. The Argentinian striker has been a thorn on Real Madrid’s side ever since he joined Barcelona. And second leg Spanish Spercup match demonstrates just how he punished Madrid. Lionel Messi scored two goals and was instrumental in the third and REal’s players seemed helpless and frustrated in finding the formula to stop him. In injury time, the tension erupted after Marcelo challenged Cesc Fabregas. Soon after, players from both sides pushed and shoved each other on the pitch and it took officials several minutes and three red cars to separate them. However, the uglier incident was courtesy of Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho. He joined the melee and poked the eye of Barca’s assistant coach, Tito Vilanova. Mourinho was already sanctioned this year after after alleging Barcelona received favorable treatment from referees and UEFA. Now, there are calls for harsher sanctions against the Real Madrid manager.
One of Spain's richest aristocrats is to marry a man 25 years her junior despite initial opposition from her children • The 85-year-old Duchess of Alba has released a statement saying she will marry Alfonso Diez, 60, in early October. It will be her third marriage. • In a rare interview, she said she wanted to marry Diez, but her children were against the idea. In July, however, she apparently placated them by dividing up much of her vast wealth among them. The duchess assigned them castles, palaces and other property of the 500-year-old House of Alba, which they will inherit upon her death. • The wedding will be an intimate ceremony attended by few people, including her six children and their spouses, former daughters-in-law – all of her children have been divorced – and a bullfighter named Francisco Rivera Ordóñez, who was once married to the duchess's only daughter, Eugenia. • The duchess is a distant relative of Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill. Her full name is Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva. She and Diez are old acquaintances, but started dating about three years ago after bumping into each other at a cinema. • Her wealth is estimated at between €600m (£524m) and €3.5bn, according to media reports. Her possessions include paintings by Goya and Velázquez and a first edition copy of Cervantes's Don Quixote

World Youth Day 2011: The controversy around the Pope’s visit in Madrid • Via Crucis, on the Paseo de Recoletos, a wide boulevard in central Madrid, evokes along its various stops the 14 “sins of mankind,” alluding to “sexual abuse”, “crimes against children” and “sins against chastity” recalling the crimes of pedophile priests who have discredited the Catholic Church in several western states. • Thursday evening, the first day of his visit, Benedict XVI, aged 84, seemed happy, but tired from the heat, when he was received by hundreds of thousands of young enthusiasts who came at Madrid from 193 countries to participate in the World Youth Days. • The splendor of the event continues to be accompanied by heated controversy related to the cost of the event and incidents between anti-Pope protesters and police. In the Puerta del Sol market in Madrid, law enforcement agents have intervened in the evening to break up a group of about 150 demonstrators. • Organizers say that this edition of World Youth Day does not cost Spanish taxpayers anything and that revenues for the local economy will be 100 million euros. About 30% of costs are paid by private sponsors and the rest by the pilgrims, the organizers added. • They gave the example of a young man coming from the diocese of Nanterre in France: he paid 440 euros for transport and accommodation for a week or 220 euros without transport. A Solidarity Fund has enabled 10,000 young people from southern countries to travel. • That leaves the costs for cleaning and security. According to critics, in the midst of the crisis, Spanish municipalities and regions had to bear many costs to welcome young people, many of whom arrived in Spain a week before the Pope’s arrival in Madrid.
