Make the databases fun by • Encouraging assignments that allow students to research topics of interest to them. • Making the databases easy to find, access, and use. • Creating activities, games, and contests that introduce students to the K-12 databases.
First, a little background … I’ve been a database “junkie” for years …
Why can’t we just use Google? Oh, come on Miss, don’t you know about Wikipedia?
Encourage assignments that allow students to research topics of interest to them. • They’ll be amazed that, using the databases, there is “acceptable” – even authoritative – information on many“off-the-wall” topics. • The source is known. • In most cases it gives you the actual citation that you can cut-and-paste into a document.
Make the databases easy to find, access, and use. Put shortcuts on all library computer desktops. Create a link on your individual school’s library webpage. Ex. Paredes Library Website Create and distribute bookmarks/handouts with the URL, usernames, passwords, short descriptions of each database.
Create activities, games, and contests that introduce students to the K12 databases. Use competitive or collaborative activities and games as part of library lessons. Run a contest over a period of time with short-term and/or long-term rewards.
