  1. The Passion of Jesus the Christ Saturday, Talk #9

  2. The Kenotic Hymn(Philippians 2:5-11) Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not deem equality with God something to be grasped.

  3. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance. He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.

  4. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess to the glory of God the Father that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  5. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. (1 Peter 2:21-24)

  6. Eternal Lord of all things, I make my oblation with Thy favor and help, in the presence of Thy infinite Goodness and in the presence of Thy glorious Mother and of all the Saints of the heavenly Court; that I want and desire, and it is my deliberate determination, if only it be to Thy greater service and praise, to imitate Thee in bearing all injuries and all abuse and all poverty of spirit, and actual poverty, too, if thy most Holy Majesty wants to choose and receive me to such life and state. (Meditation on the Call of Christ the King)

  7. One Colloquy to Our Lady, that she may get me grace from Her Son and Lord that I may be received under His standard; and first in the highest spiritual poverty, and -- if His Divine Majesty would be served and would want to choose and receive me -- not less in actual poverty; second, in suffering contempt and injuries, to imitate Him more in them, if only I can suffer them without the sin of any person, or displeasure of His Divine Majesty. . . (Two Standard Meditation)

  8. This is the most perfect kind of humility. It consists in this. . . In order to imitate and be in reality more like Christ our Lord, I desire and choose poverty with Christ poor, rather than riches; insults with Christ loaded with them, rather than honors; I desire to be accounted as worthless and a fool for Christ, rather than to be esteemed as wise and prudent in this world. So Christ was treated before me. Spiritual Exercises #167—(Third Degree of Humility)

  9. The Cross of Life

  10. The Cross of the World

  11. The Passion Passio = Submission/Passivity Jesus gives his death for us More is accomplished in Jesus’ passivity than was done in his active years

  12. At the Passion blood and water pour out after the death of Jesus Birth Image Blood is life Water washes clean https://www.whattoexpect.com/first-year/how-to-bathe-your-baby.aspx https://hiveminer.com/User/brookelj/Timeline

  13. The Agony in the Garden

  14. Agonia • athlete getting ready for the race = working up a sweat = here it is sweating blood, a moral/mental loneliness • Garden = archetype = where lovers go

  15. Jesus the lover in Agony— the Gospels speak of loneliness and betrayal— Jesus is a moral athlete who stands up to moral alienation— the Gospels barely mention the actual physical suffering

  16. Agonia in the Garden = Moral Drama = Moral Loneliness = Jesus withdrew a stone throw from others = he is alone

  17. Jesus as moral athlete—what was his moral drama? • The struggle to accept powerlessness and humiliation as necessary route to depth and glory—”Was it not necessary?”—

  18. The cup of humiliation/suffering was necessary for Jesus to accept— the goal of crucifixion was both maximal suffering and utter humiliation—

  19. The struggle to let powerless and humiliation produce understanding, compassion, and forgiveness rather than bitterness— • Nobody takes my life from me, I give it up freely—this is the moral drama—

  20. The struggle to accept a broken heart and broken dreams— • it is hard to give up dreams— • The Last Temptation of Christ

  21. The struggle to let go of life itself, • with its health, its joys, its connections, and its pleasures, particularly the pleasures of love—Let this cup pass from me

  22. An angel came to comfort him.

  23. Prayerwork: Lectio Divina Do an Ignatian Contemplation of the Agony in the Garden. Choose any of the following Gospels, Matthew 26:36-46, Mark 14:32-42, Luke 22:39-46.

  24. The grace to be sought during the third week of the Exercises is “to ask for sorrow, compassion, and shame because the Lord is going to His suffering for my sins.” Simply be with Jesus as he suffers his passion.

  25. Read one of the Passion narratives in its entirety. Mark’s is the shortest. Read slowly and stop whenever you feel moved to do so Let the Holy Spirit guide you
