Exchange with a “Pastor,” Part 2. The Attacks on God’s Word Continue.
E N D
The Attacks on God’s Word Continue Amos there is no doubt you know your scripture, did you now that when you bake a cake there is more to baking a cake then reading the recipe ?? It tasting and mixing and measuring . You know you scripture and a real good at putting them in I am still alittle confused on why you think just quoting a scripture is enough there is knowing then there is knowing. When we encounter God through His presence and spirit is knowing God not just scripture. Nathan Miller, “Pastor,” New Grace Church, Midlothian
The cavalry comes to the rescue. All this dialogue reminds me of a gospel song I recall from my teens "People writin answers to questions nobody's asking anyhow, The house is burning to the ground and we're busy arranging pictures on the wall"! Dan Miller, Nathan’s brother Yeah, Dan Miller, it's a big waste of time to try to understand God's word. My bad.
Back to the matter at hand I agree, Nathan. There is knowing (having the Scriptures memorized), and there is knowing (understanding what they mean). The devil knows the Scriptures and quoted them at Jesus in Matthew 4 when he tempted Him in the wilderness. But notice how Jesus answered the devil – “It is written” (v. 4, 7, 11). The devil misused the Scripture, and Jesus corrected him by “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). You say I don’t “know” (understand, I assume) the Scriptures. Show me how I am misusing them. You would be my friend if you would. “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.” James 5:19-20
The plea, continued Don’t just tell me I’m wrong. Show me the truth. What do all these passages mean? Do they not apply to the discussion at hand? Am I misusing them? If so, how? I want to know the truth, because Jesus says it makes us free from sin (John 8:31-36). I want to know the truth because Peter said we purify our souls by obeying the truth and we are born again by the incorruptible seed that is the word of God (1 Peter 1:22-23). James says we are in danger of death if we wander from the truth (James 5:19-20). Help me out here.
Another distraction Understanding God's word and transforming lives are two totally different things If pastors would spend their Sat evenings hanging out with some lost guys at the local sports bar their Sunday morning message might come from their heart, not just their head Dan Miller, Nathan’s brother I love you dan such well put Nathan Miller
Transforming lives What does God’s word say about how to transform lives? Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Ephesians 4:20-24 “But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
Transforming lives, cont. Colossians 3:9-10 “Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,” John 6:44-45 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned[b] from the Father comes to Me.”
My plea continues to go unanswered. The problem with religion today is that pastors put there faith in a doctrine and not in the Holy Spirit, there only contact with God is through there doctrine and there own church bylaws and faith statement or a degree on the wall, God is more then just some belief in some doctrine or a church. There are over 77 different churches in midlo and all those pastor think they are right in there faith and belief. Nathan Miller
My plea continues to go unanswered, cont. My faith is based on the relationship I have with my father and everyday it grows more and more. I know that he loves me not because of my works or anything I can do. My salvation is not based on me but Jesus Christ. I know that there is nothing I can do to make God not love me. His love is never ending when we understand that and preach the true gospel of the love of Christ it is what transforms lives forever not just a moment. Nathan Miller
Doctrine and Division What does God’s word say about doctrine?1 Timothy 4:13, 16 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. … Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. 2 John 9-11 Romans 16:17
Doctrine and Division, cont. Nathan, all I’ve done is say exactly what God’s word says. If everybody only said exactly what God’s word says, there wouldn’t be 77 different churches in Midlothian with different doctrines and practices and names and creeds. There would only be the church Jesus built (Matthew 16:18). There would only be the church Jesus bought with His blood (Acts 20:28). There would only be the church of which Christ is the Savior (Ephesians 5:23, 1:22-23, Acts 2:47).
Doctrine and Division, cont. Christians would speak the same things and be of the same mind and judgment, and there would be no divisions (1 Corinthians 1:10). There is such a thing as objective truth (John 8:32, John 17:17), and we can know it (Ephesians 3:3-5, 5:17). Jesus prayed for unity among those who would believe on Him through His word, which was revealed by the Holy Spirit to the apostles and prophets (John 17:20-23, John 14:26, 16:13). That unity comes when we speak as the oracles of God (1 Peter 4:11) and abide in the doctrine of Christ (2 John 9).
Which doctrine? So, Brother, you quote Scripture, but what doctrine do you follow? The doctrine of Church of Christ. The doctrine of Assembly of God? The doctrine of 1st Baptist? The doctrine of the Methodist? The doctrine of the Lutheran? The Catholic Church doctrine? How about the doctrine the United Pentecostals follow? How about the Presbyterian doctrine? Maybe the Mennonite or Amish doctrine? Maybe one I haven't listed? Nathan Miller The doctrine of Christ. That's what the Scriptures are...
