66% increase Reported cases of STD* by year of diagnosis, Wisconsin , 1997-2007 * Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and genital HSV infection.
WI Antibiotic Resistance ReportInvasive S. pneumoniae • Invasive isolates with high-level penicillin resistance decreased from 8.5% in 2005 to 4.8% in 2006. • Isolates with reduced susceptibility to multiple drugs (penicillin and two or more beta lactam antibiotics) increased from 6.2% in 2005 to 8.3% in 2006. • Only two isolates with fluoroquinolone resistance • Total of non-susceptible isolates decreased in the Western, Southern and Northern Regions but increased in the Northern and Southeastern Regions.

Tuberculosis • 70 cases in WI in 2007 compared to 75 in 2006 • About 250,000 WI residents are infected • Milwaukee County: 30 cases in 2007 • ___ and ___Counties each had 4 cases
HCW Influenza Vaccination 2007 • 107 facilities made the 80% Club • 35 hospitals (25%) • 72 nursing homes (18%)
WI Immunization Data • 81% vaccination rate by age 2 • 93% vaccination rate by school age • 3% opt out under personal conviction • 0.4% opt out for religious reasons
Measles • 131 cases in US from January through July • 7 confirmed cases in southeastern WI • 2 cases of rubella
Recommendations for HCW March 14, 2008 memo from DPH and WCIP: Acceptable evidence of rubella immunity is documented vaccination OR a positive titer
Recommendations for HCW “Negative measles, mumps, rubella, or varicella titers in immunized persons cannot be interpreted as non-immune status, therefore testing of HCW for immunity after documented receipt of these vaccines is not recommended.”
Safe Injection Practices • Outbreaks of Hepatitis C in NY, OK, NE, and Nevada due to unsafe injection practices • Typical sources of transmission • Re-use of syringes • Use of multi-dose vials on more than one patient • CDC estimates 1-3% of health care workers have unsafe injection practices
